Marianne Gavlak Bundren of Herndon, Virginia, passed away on July 3, 2022, due to complications from uterine cancer. Marianne is survived by her husband of 35 years Dave Bundren, sons David, Jay, and Sam, parents Capt. (Ret.) Michael and Marlene Gavlak, siblings Margery Pratt (Scott), Michele Krisko (Ken), and Michael Gavlak, Jr. (Kelly), and 18 nieces and nephews. Marianne is also survived by Atticus and Rosie, our magnificently rambunctious one-year-old black lab and gracefully aging English Springer Spaniel. They have provided great comfort and joy over the last year. Marianne was born in Jacksonville, Florida, where her father was stationed as a pilot for the US Navy. Mike’s Naval career took the family to Milton, Florida; Newport, Rhode Island; Monterey, California; and Cupertino, California, before settling in Burke, Virginia. Marianne graduated from West Springfield High School in 1981 and then proudly attended Virginia Tech. In Montieth Hall during her freshman year, Marianne met a group of wonderful women who have met every month for four decades to discuss that month’s book club reading and the even more critical topics of the day including their families, friendships, food, wine and (occasionally) to enumerate their husbands’ inadequacies. Marianne graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Virginia Tech in 1985 with a double major in English and Psychology, which left her with no option but to attend law school. After graduating from the University of Virginia Law School in 1988, she began a successful career in commercial real estate law advising companies both in a private law practice and in-house, most recently with Costco. Throughout her career, she developed and mentored colleagues and friends to form lifelong bonds. As was Marianne’s way, she remained connected and nourished friendships along the way – including from her first law firm, McGuire Woods, where friends and colleagues still gather every December to celebrate the wonder and gift of enduring friendship. Marianne’s life was filled with the joys of a life well-lived. She loved Tottenham Hotspur (much less so Liverpool), Virginia Tech football (much, much less so UVA), watching the Nats and the Capitals win championships, cycling the W&OD trail hundreds of times, skiing the Rockies dozens of times, and attending 28 Springsteen concerts. She was a tireless volunteer for causes and activities important to her, whether as a manager of her sons’ soccer teams, giving to charitable organizations, and contributing time and effort squeezed into an already full schedule. And as a strong woman, a proud mother, and an accomplished lawyer with an exceptional mind, she never lost an argument with her family. Not once (except when she let you win). Marianne had unwavering faith, a steadfast devotion to her family, a brilliant legal intellect, a finely tuned moral compass, and a keen sense for social justice. We were all beneficiaries of her unmatched hospitality, generosity, and her enviable culinary skills. As the congregants at St. John Neumann well know, Marianne had the loveliest singing voice, where invariably she sang hymns a half-beat too early and a touch too loud, perhaps in an effort to protect her less-gifted family members. Marianne’s most enduring trait was to place others unfailingly before herself. She was the place so many turned when they needed someone to listen, reflect, help or just receive an encouraging smile (or knowing admonishment) and to share in moments both easy and challenging. Marianne had the grace, presence and ability to live in each moment and appreciate the subtleties of each individual close to her. As our friend Wilson Mann describes her, “in a merciless world, Marianne chose mercy. With so many who choose not to listen, she understood and listened.” In perhaps her most important and poignant lesson to us all, she demonstrated strength, perseverance, humor and grace in the most difficult challenge one can face. She was at peace throughout the past year, sure in her faith, and trusting in God’s will and timing. She would have embraced Irish poet John O’Donohue’s view that she would not be going “somewhere strange, merely back to the home she never left.” Marianne received expert and caring treatment at Johns Hopkins’ Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center in Baltimore and at Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
