Obituary of August Van Dessel

August Van Dessel Jr. died Sunday, January 13, 2019, at Northern Virginia Hospital Center, following a brief illness associated with Parkinson’s Disease. 

 He was born 7-28-1936 in Montclair New Jersey, the third son of immigrant parents, August and Elsie Van Dessel. Augie attended school in Bloomfield, NJ. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Dartmouth College before joining the US Air Force in 1955.

 His final Air Force assignment was with the ROTC at Duke University in Durham, NC. Augie graduated from Duke in 1970 with a degree in Accounting, earned his CPA, and joined the U.S. Department of the Interior where he traveled extensively auditing the franchisees associated with the National Park Service. After several decades, he transferred to the U.S. State Department, where he worked in the Office of the Inspector General until his retirement in 2008.

 Always an avid reader, Augie’s interests crossed many disciplines including economics, history, the natural world, and the arts, which he shared with is family and friends.

 He was a member and patron of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. He was also active in the Dartmouth College Alumni Association.

 Augie is survived by Angela McDonald, her son Jeremy, his wife Theresa and children Monica and Annmarie of Reston, Va. He is also survived by his niece Donna van Arnold of Chapel Hill, NC, her husband John and their children Benzie and Rachel.
