Monte posted a condolence
Thursday, June 13, 2019
Thank you Pastor Laurvick.
My name is monte. I am the father of Kira and Kelli; the uncle of Brad; the brother of Marzella; the husband of Angela; and the son of Emerson Player and Barbara Jean Brown Player.
Gathering at times of loss is always, at the very least, discomforting - but that feeling is something that connects us in its commonness. Recently a wise woman gave me great comfort by simply warmly reminding me of a truth - that we all have to go through loss. That woman's name is Christoria Reshard - my mother-in-law.
At first I thot id talk about my mother. Maybe share some stories, tell of her achievements. And talk about mothers - how they lead, teach, care, counsel, and love and support us. Cuz we all have one - sometimes more than one. Our love for our mothers is another thing that connects us. And we all are indebted to them - if we're lucky. But first of all, on my mother's behalf, I want to thank you all for thinking of her and making this big fuss about her. Cuz I know she'd remind me to do that. This is what I had at first thot to say. But then I remembered that there were a few things yet left to say ...to her. No matter what, there are always a few more things to say to a loved one who passes on - always 1 more visit, 1 more phone call, 1 more msg ...1 more letter.
So. Dear Ma. Thank you for simplifying life and living so well. You said learn and believe in 1 rule - treat people the way you'd want to be treated. I listened and I heard you. Thank you for showing in real life, in real time, what strength looks like for 28 years after the passing of Emerson, the love of your life. Just this may 7th the day after his birthday I sent a note to you: happy belated Emerson Player Day. You wrote back, always upbeat: I will never forget. And thank you for showing me that often the best way to help someone is to sit with them ...quietly. And that where words fail a loving look will not. And that the purpose of life is not found in things but in people. And that we live on when people carry us on with them. I see you in my daughters and my nephew. Just like I saw Pawpaw and Mamma in you, and your brothers and sisters.
I watched you never stop learning in so many areas of interest - be it business, politics, technology or pop culture. You called it being well-rounded. I watched you meet challenges head-on. I watched you return a favor by passing it forward. You showed me what winning is, what cool is and what's possible. I listened and I heard you. I will pass all that you are ...forward. Thank you. You did unbelievably well. Im proud to be your son. And ...you were right ...as usual. Your work here was all done. I will write again. And yes, I will tell everyone that they can write or speak to you; and to everyone else they're missing. Thank you for listening ...again.
p.s. Marz said, you're beautiful. Yes you are.

To honor the memory and long life of Barbara Player or “Baba”, it’s so hard to summarize how much I enjoyed her presence, company, wisdom, stories, warmth and support. Whether visiting Baba in her Reston home filled with furnishings from her worldly travels or spending time with her, Marzella, Bradley, Monty and amazing extended family members who I grew to love, I thank God that our paths crossed in life! I thank God for enabling me to meet her wonderful daughter, Marzella, 30 years ago when we happened to work in the same HR office at PenFed. The passage of time doesn’t dull my memory but strengthens my faith in a higher power and a bigger purpose for each of us while on earth. Baba left a mark on those she knew. I know she left a mark on me and my adoring children, Brandon and Lauren, along with my extended Toliver family or clan. My father, Stafford Toliver, brothers and sister send their love, respect and condolences. I will miss Baba but I know her spirit lives on... through Marzella, Bradley, Monty and his family, and through her nieces, nephews, cousins and countless others. I will always treasure time spent with her over the holidays, birthday celebrations, special occasions, shopping sprees at Eastern Market, movies, dinner and in our homes! RIP Baba and it’s been an honor and a joy to have known and loved you. God bless.

Marzella and Monte, my condolences to both of you and your families on the passing of Barbara. Not only was she your beloved mother but she was 'mother like' to me too. I will miss her kindness, continual thoughtfulness and loving spirit toward me and my boys. I used to say to her, I want to be Barbara Player when I grow up! -smile-
Even though I've lost my mother too, I can't say that I know how you must be feeling. There are no words which come close to describing the feeling of losing a mother. Just know you are always in my heart and thoughts - as she will be too.
Love ~ Bernadette (and Carl, Spencer, Bryant)

What a beautiful tribute to Barbara Jean Player, known to me as "Mrs. Player," as she was my closest friend Marzella's mother. I first met Mrs. Player in high school in Bonn, Germany, when Marzella and I were classmates. Marzella and I continued our friendship to this day, and through that friendship I've had the good fortune to know Mrs. Player, a warm, kind, smart, independent soul. May she rest in peace after living a life filled with love and with grace. Much love to the family. -- Nanine
