Having, belatedly, learned of David's death, I want to send my condolences to his family. David was a wonderful person and a great guide to me when he was my teacher at Open High School in Richmond in the 1970s. Reading the posts here, he clearly had a big impact on many folks along the way. In large part due to David and the Italian course he taught at Open High my Junior year, I fell in love with the country and can still speak enough Italian to embarrass my children on visits there, of which there have been 13 and, hopefully, counting. And my kids have become big fans of Italy, as well. To David's family, please take this as but one more example, among many, that David's impact was great in life ... and beyond.

I had Mr. Segal my senior year at Herndon High for Spanish class. He was my favorite teacher at the school. I then became a teacher and had the privilege of being a colleague of David’s as he was a tech specialist for our school. It was hard for me to call him David because I had so much respect for him. He was such a great teacher and was one of the reasons I decided to become a teacher myself. I was so sad to hear of his battle with cancer. My condolences to his family and friends. Love, Karen Tovani Long (class of ‘88)

David was such a kind and talented man. I hired him to take photos of me which I use regularly in my professional material. I get endless compliments about those photos, and I referred several people to David for theirs. They were always impressed and happy with his work. I will miss David personally and professionally. I admire his determination and struggle to live every day to its fullest. I’ve had the utmost respect for his fight to live and his love for his friends and family.

David and I went almost all the way through school together. He was full of energy and his mind was always in super drive. I saw him at the Freeman Class of '67's 50th reunion and we had a lovely time catching up. He had adopted in Russia; we had adopted in Romania. So many interests. What an amazing person Heaven has gained!
Love to Dee Dee(we sat at the back of Miss Baker's French class), Florence Segal and David's family.

David and I were friends through our mutual love of the theatre. We attended many of the same shows supporting our friends and each other. We finally had the chance to be on stage together with the production of Equus. David’s courage and determination to fight and live were an inspiration to everyone. I am going to miss him but not forget him. Rest In Peace David. Susan & Thom Garvey

It's strange how sometimes, when bad things happen in life, you realize the true measure of a person. Ten years ago, I had just been released from the hospital after a life-threatening blood clot. Recovery at home afterwards was a blur of pain, fear, and shuffling around using a walker at age 32. I had known David casually for years; he taught at my high school (Herndon), and we performed in several shows together in Northern VA. He was an acquaintance...not someone I considered a close friend at that time.
Until that blood clot.
David showed up at my front door with flowers, and sat with me, talked with me for hours about my fears. He didn't care that I was in my bathrobe or using a walker or totally a mess...he just sat and listened, and showed up (literally and figuratively) in a way that no other friend did.
David, today I honor you and remember the impact your gesture had on me. I will never forget you and your kindness. Be free, friend, with no more pain.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Pencek

Italian with Mr. Segal was the most fun I had in high school. Playing bocce in the classroom, watching La Strada, class dinner at an Italian restaurant in Lake Anne. Vivid memories. He was such a big personality, full of enthusiasm for learning and love for his students. He made the world around him a brighter place. Rest in peace, Mr. Segal. We will try to keep your light shining.

I met David when we were little children -- not quite, but it seems that way. We were undergrads at American University, back in 1968.
I love the circle of friends that David and I were part of and that we have stayed close with all these years. But even in that company of dear friends, David stood out. Never shy about speaking his mind, David's wit and humor got us all through many hard times. He was incapable of B.S. and wore his heart on his sleeve.
How valiantly he faced his years of illness! And how terribly much he will be missed.
Condolences to his family.
That's all I can say for now. It sucks that he is gone! Love, Pama

I remember after doing Evita at Vienna, David threw a grande cast party at his home! So many people came to the party and the house was filled with joy, happiness and song! ! You could not have asked for a finer host! Having had the privilege of working alongside David in several productions I have rarely met a finer individual and human being! Always willing to give 150% of himself to help anyone At any time. He was always happy and full of laughter and you could not help smile when you were around him. You definitely made your mark David! Your memory will live on forever inside of each and every one of us. I for one will miss you with all the pieces of my heart! Peace to you my friend!

I am so sorry to have lost an old friend of mine. David was a really nice guy. A Renaissance man for sure. He opened up to the entire world and enjoyed everything! He jumped into life with both feet with an open mind, and an open heart and he just LIVED! I know he adored his family, and especially his wonderful son, Gabe. I know we are all heartbroken, and we need to take the time to cry and to heal. Because David is now an angel in heaven, and the Lord has his hands full! He will always be missed, but in the quiet times, we will all feel his presence. He will never really be gone. Just close your eyes, and remember the good things. With much love and sympathy, Anna Almond
