Obituary of Irvin Windsor Kemp
Irvin Windsor Kemp, 83, died quietly and unexpectedly on June 6, 2019 in Sterling, Virginia.
Irvin was born in Norfolk, Va on Jan. 7, 1936 to Mary Halbleib and Irvin Windsor Kemp, both deceased. He attended James Barry Robinson Academy, and Walsingham Academy, Williamsburg Va, before attending William&Mary-VPI for Aeronautical Engineering. He joined the US Air Force Jan 1955.
He served as an Air Traffic Controller at Idlewild Airport Long Island, Selfridge AFB Michigan, Andersen AFB Guam, and Norfolk Municipal Airport before retiring from Washington ATC Center after 33 years.
Irvin carried a presence as large as the space he filled, and he gave generously of his thoughtfully prepared resources. As a young man he was a member of the Leesburg Flying Club regularly treating friends and family to rides in a Cessna 172, his later years enjoying regular luncheons with the Retired ATC. His many hobbies were wood working, furniture building, fishing, hunting, camping, and “Donut Sunday”—comically regarded his monthly church highlight. He possessed a personality rooted in rich animated storytelling and witty sayings (oft repeated) like, “Why am I always the last to know?!” In all the ways a man could be loved and admired by friends and family, ”I.W.” was immeasurably blessed.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Genevieve Marie Campioli Kemp; daughter Catherine Angier (Chuck) of Sandy Level, Va; daughter Deborah DeNardin (Tom) of Monroe, La; son Mark Windsor Kemp (Hope) of Burlington, NC, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and several faithful friends since childhood.
