Obituary of Glendora Hilt Rose Schnizer

Glendora Schnizer, age 104, of Great Falls, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2019.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1020 Springvale Road, Great Falls, Virginia 22066 on Monday, June 17th at 10:00 a.m. with the Reverend Jerry J. Pokorsky officiating. Friends and relatives are invited to participate. She will be laid to rest with Robert J. Rose in a private ceremony to take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, New Jersey at a later date.

Glendora was born in Hartford, Wisconsin to George and Emily Hilt on May 20, 1915. She enjoyed growing up in a small town community and, along with her brother Jack, helped her parents run the Commercial Hotel. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert Rose, after graduation from Hartford High School. They set up their first household in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but eventually moved out east to Chatham, New Jersey. There, she raised her family and became an avid bridge player, learned to play golf, and was active member of the St. Patrick’s Church community. Upon the death of her husband, Glendora’s life took a new direction. She joined the workforce and became a librarian, where she put her love of reading to perfect use. It was then that she met her future husband, Harry Schnizer. They married and soon after, moved to California, settling in Santa Rosa. She enjoyed the California life …playing golf, being a Junior Leaguer, an active member of the Red Cross, being a founding member of the Star of the Valley Catholic Church, and taking visiting family on winery tours. She especially enjoyed spoiling her and Harry’s grandchildren during their summer vacations. Upon Harry’s death, she decided to move back east to be closer to family and settled into Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, Maryland. She continued to play golf, bridge and volunteer, working at St. Agnes in the Breast Center. After Glendora turned 100, she moved to Brightview Great Falls where she enjoyed a vibrant life until the very end.

Glendora is survived by her son, Robert Rose (Marie) of Ocean Pines, Maryland and her daughters, JoAnn Phipps of Blairsville, Georgia, Lizabeth Cline (John Kelly) of Washington, DC and step-daughter Linda Adams (Neal) of Brookfield, Connecticut. She is predeceased by husbands Robert J. Rose and Harry F. Schnizer, her parents George Hilt and Emily Scheeg Hilt, her brother Jack Hilt and a sister Elizabeth Hilt and step-son Peter Schnizer. She leaves behind her brother’s loving family along with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and soon to be, great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, tribute donations may be made to her hospice group care of: VITAS Community Connection at VITAS Healthcare, 1604 Spring Hill Road, Suite 450, Vienna, Virginia 22182. The family also wishes to extend their gratitude to The Virginian staff for their loving care and support in Glendora’s final days.
