I learned of Roger's death today from another "Reston Starbucks friend." We used to sit around Starbucks with several people and would attend parties, movies, dinners with each other as a group of about six to ten people. Eventually many of our group moved to other areas and connections were not as frequent. Roger was a wonderful person!

Roger and I worked side by side in the same small company on separate jobs for more than 20 years. From 2002 to 2005, we got to know one quite well because he and I both commuted from Reston to our office with the FAA south of the National Mall. Based on that experience, I can fully support what was written into his obituary but would like to add the following:
First of all, Roger Stone was what is best described as a self-made man. When he talked of his past adventures with electrons, he was always filled with glee about his adventures, especially how he bootstrapped himself from High School to GE in Schenectedy, then as a GI, onto the NIKE battery guarding the skies to the west of the White House. The site, north of Reston, has long since been abandoned, but Roger loved to tell stories about how he, alone, saved the day many times when the battery desperately needed the attention and skill set that only he was able to provide. His face would actually glow when he told of his exploits: this was a happy man. We've all read about someone beaming: Roger could do that as well as anyone I've ever known, he was the poster boy for the smile emoji.
Secondly, I also remember that he researched, wrote, and published the history of the Stone family. When he showed it to me, he was modest but it was obvious that only he could have produced this tome. He labored on it for many years, and he was rightly proud of his work. I hope that someone in the family will take over all he did tracing the family tree, that work needs to be preserved if at all possible.
Another very important fact about Roger is that he, by his persona, was able to form strong bonds with his co-workers. They respected and trusted him, and for that reason, they enjoyed working with him even if the schedule was sometimes brutal and the work was sometimes indescribably arcane. For Roger, there was always the promise of a good time when the work was done, and I never knew him to abandon that solid anchor.
Finally, in retirement, we would meet from time to time for lunch, and he remained the same ebullient person that he had always been. He was a role model for many, and his memory deserves to be cherished. I cherish it and will never forget his kind and gentlemanly manner.

- In Loving Remembrance of Roger Stone -
When we think of the many memories of Roger, we can’t help but think of him as part of our family. We each feel so blessed and grateful that he came into our lives. It was evident from the time that Ellie and Roger met on a Royal Caribbean cruise in the piano bar that they would share a special bond. Romeo Roger (fondly referred to by Cindy!) would soon show his charisma and so began the start of their adventures.
The love Roger had for his immediate and extended family and friends was always obvious. The affection and closeness that our family also shared with Roger encompassed not only our Mom (Ellie), her children and grandchildren (he was Grandpa Roger to them). Roger was there with noble devotion and care for our Mom throughout their time together. From the moment they met on a cruise, they enjoyed many travels far and away, but also many of our family get-togethers and just each other’s daily companionship. Even after our Mom’s passing, he continued to show his genuine thoughtfulness and generosity to our families.
We will always remember and cherish all the moments shared together.
With Our Love, Cindy and Mark
The Cheney Family (Mark, Debbie, Kaleena, Kyle and Kaylee)
and The Rutledge Family (Cindy, Steve, Mike, Sarah and Jenny)

I met Roger on a cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL about 10 years ago. I have been widowed for 20 years. It was a cruise that combined 3 15 day cruises from Florida to Los Angeles. He was on the 1st 15 day part of the cruise. I continued on to Los Angeles with about 25 friends from California. He knew that I was in a new relationship at home, in San Diego, and he respected my desire to remain friends. He was a gentle giant, a consummate gentleman, a respected friend, and a generous soul. We had a lot of fun together. We stayed in contact until about 1 year ago. I loved receiving all of his travel logs and news about his health and women friends he traveled with. He visited my husband and me in San Diego at our home 5 years ago. He lived his life to the fullest and I admired his loving spirit and his respect for humankind. I hope Roger is cruising around in heaven with some of his cruise buddies, his late wife and his companions.
