George C Guthrie, 83, of Sterling, VA passed away on October 27, 2019 at Lansdowne Hospital in Leesburg, Virginia following an extended Alzheimer and Parkinson’s illness.  He leaves his wife of 36 years, Andrea “Gina” (Alsop) Guthrie. He is survived by his children Tim Guthrie (Tim’s wife Jenny Guthrie), and Lisa Nordin.  Followed by three grandkids, Kody Nordin, Shon Nordin and Candace Nordin.  He was preceded in death by his two sons Michael and Robert Guthrie and daughter Kim Guthrie.  He also leaves Gina’s three sons Michael, Robert and John Booher and three grandchildren, Jordan, Joshua and Nicole.

Born on July 30, 1936 in Avery North Carolina, the son of George and Ethel (Tolley) Guthrie.  In his early years George was quick to leave school to pursue a career serving our country in the U.S. Air Force.  Throughout Georges 20-year career, he trained as a weapons maintenance and flight engineer technician achieving rank of Master Sargent at retirement.  After his military career he changed uniforms and served in the U.S. postal service where he retired after 20 years.

He was an avid sports fan- golf, football, basketball and tennis.  He was always cheering for the home team, especially the Redskins or his North Carolina Panthers.  He loved to listen to music and was an amateur keyboard player.  His favorite bands were the Rolling Stones and the Eagles.

He was a generous contributor to multiple charities during his lifetime, especially Veterans organizations.  A service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in the coming months.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Fisher House – Helping Military Families, at engage.fisherhouse.org
