In 1990, I found myself in a panic to find daycare for my 2-year old son, Brent, when my son’s caregiver found an excellent opportunity that far exceeded what my husband and I could offer her. As a small business owner at the time, I vividly recall selecting the daycare portion of Nysmith due to nearby location to my business. Despite my total lack of concern for my son’s future beyond daycare, Carole and her wonderful staff and family provided the education and guidance to my son that has brought him to be a responsible adult that I fear my husband and I may not have otherwise achieved despite our own diversified abilities. The education and life skills my son developed in his years at Nysmith have guided him to not only excel academically after leaving Nysmith, but to also undertake to serve our military as a radiologist in the US Navy. It was Carole and her husband’s interest in nurturing my son’s mathematical attributes that ultimately guided him to achieve whatever goal he sought. There is no way I can begin to express what the Nysmith school, faculty, and family meant to my son’s growth and development as a person. It only takes a village to raise a child unless that child is lucky enough to be a child under the care of Carole Nysmith and the educational community she established. I only regret that I just discovered that Carole had passed unbeknownst to my family. I believe Carole is now in a place where she can continue to guide her children from heaven.

I met Carole while teaching at Dogwood Elementary Schoo back in l984 when she began taking students over in Lake Anne at the small facility where it all began.......She was a dynamic and positive educator whose creativity for teaching children was in front of the curve. Our daughter, Lauryn, attended and thrived with the loving and truly professional atmosphere of Naismith School. Carole was one of a kind and will be sorely missed by everyone.

Ms. Nysmith was a truly remarkable woman, in both the grace in which her smile shone, and the kindness which her actions spoke. I can recall, reaching back into the past, how she spoke with true passion and joy when she read for my class and I back in elementary school, sparking a delightful curiosity within each and every one of us. Her presence was felt like a perpetual summer, with light breezes of generosity and tenderness. Her smile illuminated a room where no candles were lit, showing the world a bit more brightness were it was lacked. Her laughter warmed a home with a vacant hearth, helping to rid the world of uninviting, frosty temperatures. Beautiful and wise, she greeted all of her students with the same affection and welcoming, giving us all a brilliant start to our day. Her words of inspiration linger in the air, like an everlasting gift that shall never perish. This influential and incredibly stunning woman shall always continue to sing in my heart, and glisten in my memory.

Dear Nysmith Family ~~
The fact that I am writing these thoughts is a painful reality of Mrs. Nysmith's passing. I share your sadness -- especially because tomorrow marks the first anniversary of my own father's passing.
Mrs Nysmith was a treasure. Aside from the committed educator she was, she had a warm, caring heart. I will always remember the times when she would stand outside her office door and thank the recess attendants for the job we were doing, as we came indoors. Especially when it was SO cold outside! Several times she would place my hands in hers to warm them up, and say "Thank you for what you do for our children."
I loved seeing her in the hallways. She was lovely and elegant, and a picture of strength, poise and grace. She was kind and thoughtful, and always so TRULY appreciative of what the staff was doing for the students. That quality in one's character is not often found.
I send this message with love for you Mrs. Nysmith, and for all the members of your family. The halls are emptier without you, and yet your presence will be felt forever throughout the school. Rest peacefully, and know that the lives you touched will touch other lives forever. What an incredible legacy!
With love and a full heart ~~
Linda Peterson

What a difference this school made in our lives. We can't imagine what our lives would have been like without the experience that our children had in attending the Nysmith School. Carol's dream of providing the lifelong love of learning certainly came true for the many that have been lucky enough to benefit from her ideal. Both of my children inherited that passion from Carol and are both truly committed to sharing this vision with others in their work. Thank you Carol for your vision and passion for educating our children. You are forever in our hearts.

7 years ago, when we were looking for an excellent school for our bright 4 year old, we looked into Nysmith. We were honored to be given the school admissions tour by Ms. Carol Nysmith herself. Her enthusiasm and respect for Education was infectious! I thought even then - She has such a warm personality and yet such focused goals. Till earlier this year, seeing her in the hallways with her many seasonal sweaters and warm, radiant Good Mornings filled ya with joy. How she knew all 800 students by name is a mystery to me. We always felt welcomed and at home with Ms. Carol at the helm. It’s a huge loss to the community but we shall all do our best by her ideals. Our sincere respect and regards go to the family.

Carole Nysmith’s smile and warmth will never be forgotten. She brought joy to so many and compassion to all. She most definitely lived a successful life.
“To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. I had heard a lot of great things about Carole prior to coming to Nysmith in the early 2000’s; mainly from my twin sister, Nicola. You’re going to love her! She is warm and friendly. Greets all the children in the mornings and they respond to her in kind saying, “Good morning Mrs. Nysmith,” and hugging her.
From my very first day of work, I echoed what Nicola said. I knew this was one special Lady. Carole not only had a warm personality but she also shared a trait of mine, whimsy. She loved her seasonal sweaters. You know, the ones some of us had back in the 80’s. When I commented one time how much I loved her sweaters and wished I had kept mine, she responded, “Darling, I used be able to order a whole bunch of these sweaters from catalogs. Nowadays they are so hard to find. People who can get their hands on them, wear them to ugly sweater parties.”
In closing, I’ll never forget how Carole both noticed and complemented her staff. One day, when I saw Carole in the hallway outside her office, Carole stopped me and said, “I told Kenneth how you wipe down the play ground equipment every day. You really care about the children’s safety and we appreciate all the hard work you do.”

Being interviewed by Carole for a teaching job at the Nysmith School back in 1997; hearing Carole’s chipper voice as she greeted the children and staff in the hallway with “Hello darling”; letting us know that she had “the best teaching staff and she wouldn’t trade us for anybody in the world”; spending countless hours hand writing the class schedules and then pulling us aside individually to personally let us know what we would be doing the following school year. These are just a few of my fond memories of Carole. The main thing I will always remember, however, is Carole’s generosity. One particular Grandparents Day, when Kurtis was in my kindergarten French class, Carole was delighted to both see and hear the kids do a rain chant in French under my small umbrella. While 2-3 kids took turns chanting, Carole was engrossed in the children’s squeals of delight as I squirted the umbrella with water from a spray bottle. Well, the very next day, Carole came by the room and said, “Miss Cassis, I enjoyed your class very much, but I thought you could use a bigger umbrella!” And with that she gave me a huge umbrella.
In closing, Carole’s door was always open and she enjoyed talking with her staff. Most recently, this past winter, Carole stopped me in the teacher’s lounge, took me aside and said, “If you ever want some tea, I have a tea kettle to boil water in my office.”
