I loved having Jim as the shared male watching over the back rows of “sisters” at Church. He was valiant at “being there” for all us and I remember how he did what he could for my husband Norm Calhoun when he became Ill and before his Departure.
He the kind of a friend that few will ever find .
We treasure his memory.

I have many memories of my pop-pop. He was always there for me and would listen to all the good and bad going on in my life. He taught me how to play checkers, he reminded me every day that I’m nowhere near retirement, he told me every day how much he loved me and was my bestest friend. I never felt judged by him, and could come to him no matter what. We would play basketball at Chuck e Cheese together, and play candy land for hours. I would always tell him that I’m the favorite grandchild. My siblings would say that they are but he and I both knew the truth, and there can only be one favorite... I loved writing sticky notes for both my Mamwa and pop-pop and hiding them around their house. It was a game we would play. I would hide the notes on the toilet seat, under rugs, under lamps and so forth. To this day he never found all of them, but he sure did try. I love my pop-pop and always will. There is no one as wonderful as him. He loved his family so much and we love him.

I’ve only known Pop Pop for 4 or 5 years, but I’ve really enjoyed the short time that I had with him. His stories are best, which he shared as a tradition at family gatherings, especially his favorite green door story. He is among the best examples of how to treat your spouse, and gave his grandchildren hundreds of great experiences just by being himself. One of my favorite memories of him is a recent one: last year, following my wedding where I married his granddaughter, he led the charge in dancing with his wife, showing off unexpectedly talented moves. He is an amazing example of a man. Lastly, as I’ve heard said of him before, they really don’t make guys like him anymore.

He was very funny and always made me laugh. And I would tickle his head. He would sometimes challenge me to checkers. And he would watch my performances even when it was recorded he would come to everything.

A few years ago, I started to take Pop-Pops phone whenever we would go out somewhere and take a photo of our heads. He would always look at my funny like “why are you taking my phone”, even though he knows what I’m doing (he loves his phone). As a result, there are all these funny forehead pictures that have obnoxiously taken over his camera roll

One of my favorite things to do in the whole world is to place games in the basement with my siblings and Pop-Pop. We gather around the table and pick out a game (almost always “Sorry”). We’d get so rough and loud, accusing each other of cheating (because that was the only explanation for the others winning).
Another one of my favorite things in the whole word is that Pop-Pop ALWAYS has some king of cranberry juice in the fridge, and extras in the garage. Ever since I was little, I remember fumbling to get my sippy-cup so I could fill it to the brim with my favorite drink.
One of my favorite things that poppop says is, “Oh is that so” - then he throws his head back and laughs. He says this whenever I say something that’s completely ridiculous or when I tell him about something funny I did. Almost anything could get Pop-Pop to laugh because he find so much joy in the simple things. He loves to laugh and smile :) Another thing he’d always say was “How’s the boys”. He still asked me this even after I got engaged, thinkin he was funny ;)
One of our routine conversations would consist of me FaceTiming Pop-pop whenever I was cooking in my dorm. He’d pick up and say, “what’s cooking”. He’d always chuckle and laugh at all the different things I would whip up - some he’s thinks sounds really good, others he thought I was loosin it! Nevertheless, it was always a fun conversation we’d have.
I know without a doubt that my Pop-Pop has so much love in his heart to give to each and everyone of us. He loved my siblings and I SO so much. He loved Mamaw with everything he had. He loved Mommy and was always so supportive. In his last trip to the hospital, a nurse came in and asked him, “who are these lovely ladies”. His answer was, “my beautiful granddaughters”. I don’t think the nurses understood him as she has a strange look on her face but I did and I think about this often. He saw what made ever person special and new each one of us for who we were. I see Pop-Pop as a friend and someone that I could FaceTime whenever I’m sad, happy or just saw something cool I wanted to share. With that said, I know he loves us all the same - so much so that we all think we are his favorite - but I know I’m the actual favorite grandchild.
Favorite granddaughter out

When I was a little girl, I would play in Mamwa’s and Pop-Pop’s basement. Mamwa had set up a craft table for all of her grandchildren to use. Pop-pop one day asked me if I had made paper chains. I said no, and so he taught me now to make paper chains. We spent several hours that day making paper chains until it was time for me to go home. We had chains hanging from the ceiling, walls, couch, bookshelf, bathroom, almost anywhere you can think of. Almost every time I went to Mamwa’s and Pop-pop’s house, we made several long paper chains. There got to be a point where there were so many chains, Mamwa temporarily banned us from making paper chains. Now I teach other kids how to make chains, just like my pop-pop taught me.

I’ve only known you pop pop for 5 months but every time we were together were some great time. You’d always tell me stories about boot camp and talk about guns and all other sorts of military/ history stuff. It always made me feel really good and I was always super interested into everything you had to say. Love you lots, thank you for all of the life advice and setting the perfect example of how to treat your spouse ❤️

Almost every morning I would text or call my pop-pop to rise and shine. If I didn’t text/call him in the morning I would do it at night as a joke. Pop-pop would also text/ call me back to rise and shine. It was something we said to each other almost like a reminder to not be a lazy bum. I loved texting/calling him and he loved texting/ calling me back. Sometimes we really would wake each other up when we wanted to sleep in with our texts or calls. He is the best pop-pop in the world and so technologically savvy.

I will always miss the times of coming up to him and telling him about my newest electronics project after trying to take his phone from his pocket before he could grab it. I will miss his laugh and his story’s that he would tell me when it was just me and him together.
