Obituary of Julia Johnson Niemeyer

Julia Frances Johnson Niemeyer was born on October 25, 1918 in Lavergne, Tennessee.  Most of her childhood years were spent in Tennessee, where her parents instilled in her a strong sense of integrity, respect, and trustworthiness (her words), as well as a love of cooking, reading, and music.  Her favorite song as a child was "Brighten the Corner Where You Are".  She succeeded in doing just that throughout her life.  Julia loved to garden, especially growing cutting flowers so that she could beautify her home with fresh flower arrangements.
 
After a couple of years of intensive secretarial training following high school, Julia was offered a job as a stenographer at the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, DC.  It was there that she met her dear husband Erwin and they were married in 1941.  Julia and Erwin made their home in Northern Virginia, where they remained together until his passing in 1988.  They raised three children (Sharon, Gary, and Nancy), as well as raising Julia's younger sister Nancy from age 14.
 
Julia and Erwin were charter members of what was to become McLean Presbyterian Church.  Their lives were interwoven with the life of the church, where they served in the areas of church leadership, secretarial duties, Sunday School teaching, Pioneer Girls, and hospitality.  Julia taught the 4 and 5 year old Sunday School class for 30 years and "loved every minute of it".
 
Julia had the gift of hospitality and enjoyed having people over for a meal and a good old fashioned "visit".  In her later years she particularly enjoyed having her grown children and grandchildren come to see her.  She says in a journal she wrote for her grandchildren that what she wanted for her family was for them to "love God and show respect, to do their best, to love and respect their family, to be aware of people who need help, to love their country, and to work for the freedoms it provides".  She says that one of the things she had growing up that we don't have now is "such joy in doing simple things".
 
As Julia wrote, What a story I have to tell -- a story of God's faithfulness and grace and of blessings abounding at each stage of my life.  His compassions are new every morning and my gratitude is beyond measure.  I have been privileged to serve an awesome God, have a loving and caring family, and a host of friends..."
 
She will be deeply missed.
