I worked with General Lawson at the National Coal Association as a rookie writer and editor. However, I certainly thought any day the job offer from the NYTimes or ABC News around the corner would come to recognize me. Yeah, I was a handful. However, all that attitude seemed to amuse Dick more than anything else. We often were two of the first to arrive at work and shared an elevator and short conversation. He would always leave me with a thought on national events or association happenings that would give me something to ponder the rest of the day.
But it wasn't all pretty. When I made a mistake (and there were certainly many) and you were called up to the top floor, you had to be ready to hear about it too. However, it was always a learning moment -- nothing that made you want to pack up your desk. I remember putting a proposal together to work from home when I was pregnant with my first child -- very novel idea in the early 1990s. I had research numbers, charts and graphs etc and thought I would change the policy for the whole organization. Dick indulged my presentation by listening patiently and asking a question or two and simply said "Ok." I thought I had done a great deed for all of womanhood. "No," he said, "You can do it because there is only one person who cares more about the magazine you edit than I do, and that's you. I could put you in the middle of the desert and you'd make sure that product would never suffer. Keep it up"
And I have never forgotten -- I list Dick as one of the top career influencers in my life. Thank you sir. RIP

When he first arrived at Patch Barracks, HQ EUCOM, he called his Personal Security team to his office. Among other things, he said that he knew our job was to protect him above all others, BUT, if his wife was with him, he would not leave without her. On that he would not budge.

I worked the Generals guards/PSD for General Lawson in 1985-1985. He was one of a kind. A leader who was great to those who worked for and with him. I remember working at the house in Stuttgart over a Christmas when he came out and told me to go inside and eat. After explaining to him that I was his security he told me he would walk my post. That is a great example of how he cared for those under him. He will be missed.

My Dad worked for Gen Lawson (two separate times in the 1980s). It was inspiring as a young boy to experience Gen Lawsons style of leadership. Decades later he spoke at my fathers Arlington service - oh, he had such a wonderful way of telling stories. What a rich life he led and such wonderful memories he gave us all.

I echo Jennifer's sentiments; General Lawson was not only the greatest leader of people I experienced during my career, but also a person of the highest character and ability. It was my honor and privilege to have worked for him, and to have written words and produced publications on his behalf. He will always have a special place in my memory.
