My buddy, Phil Dunn, and I used to spend weekends with the Gibson's back when I was about 14 and riding a 125cc Honda Elsinore. Gad, that's 47 years ago. Cecil used to impart his wisdom to us, and Jimmy hardly spoke at all, he was so shy. But he sure could ride! We had met at a motocross race somewhere and become friends, probably walking the track together before a race. He had a very kind younger sister, too, I think, and the whole family was just so kind to us suburban kids whom they took in so generously. Going to Herndon for the weekend was like going to another world, where we could ride dirt bikes and eat biscuits & gravy. I will always be grateful to Jimmy and his entire family for making me feel like a brother, too. Am so sorry he has left us too soon. But I'm sure we'll meet again, and Cecil will be there, too! Lord knows they were REAL caring people. "Slicker than deer guts on a brass doorknob," as Cecil used to say. Dang, I miss them.

Jimmy was quiet, polite, kind, and dedicated. I was always amazed at how hard he worked to condition his body for racing and how hard he worked at the skills needed to succeed. It was a joy to go to the races and watch Jimmy, most often out front, with his Cycle Sport jersey on. He and his dad drew many young racers into their orbit, making them better for the experience.

I worked with Cecil for many years at Cycle Sport and ate plenty of Jimmy’s dust in Open A. Anybody that was involved in mid-Atlantic motocross in the 70’s and early 80’s knew who the Gibsons were and knew that they were something special, both on and off the track. I know that Jimmy is with his Dad and he’s in a better place but I also know how hard it is for the ones that are left behind. My heart and prayers go out to the Gibson family. God speed Jimmy.

Such a genuine soul. Jimmy was a loyal and trusted member of our team at Tri-Tek Engineering. Surveying is hard work, and Jimmy set a high standard with his positive attitude and commitment to our projects. He was always willing to help younger members of the crew learn and encouraged them to be their best. Jimmy, you'll be missed but never forgotten. Blessings to your family, prayers for comfort as we all grieve your passing.

As a young man racing motocross I looked up to Jimmy as we raced on the same team - Cycle Sport Yamaha. He was soft spoken and the ultimate sportsman even when he didn't win a race. I watched every one of his motos and cheered him on from the sidelines. Although I had posters of professionals on my bedroom walls it was Jimmy who was my true hero. He always let his riding do the talking. I am the man I am the man today because of Jimmy's good sportsmanship. You will be remembered in my heart Jimmy.

Jimmy I will miss you my brother
I remember when we met sledding on 3rd street hill in Herndon and roller skating at Dominion skate rink in Sterling.Guess I was 9 or 10 you would have been 15 or 16 and the impression you made on me then carried through our entire friendship. Always such a fun, loving, generous, and very humble guy. Teaching me how to ride a motorcycle to be competitive when racing. All the great times riding to races, walking tracks before the race, and watching you dominate the tracks. You got me my first job at Herndon Texaco. I was truly blessed have you call me your friend and brother though out your life and I thank you and your father Cecil for all the great memories I will cherish the rest of my life. Deepest sympathies to your family.
Rest In Peace Jimmy I love you bro

Oh Jimmy, to hear of your passing just saddens me.. Since knowing you from the Texaco days, I admired your charm, wit, good looks, those baby blues, and your kind heart. Back then I was just as shy around you as you were around me. Since then, you have always remained that kind hearted, sweet soul.. I know you are at peace now. Fly high with the angels my dear friend. My prayers go out to you and all your family. RIP my friend… Tammy Bickings

When I heard about you leaving this world all I could think of was the fun times we had way back when working at Texaco in Herndon. Every payday you would spend your entire pay check on that Mustang making it the coolest car in town. Rest easy and I wish peace for your family and friends. David Armentrout
