Obituary of Josephine Evans Burns

Josephine Evans was born September 24, 1921 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Ada L. Evans and Burrell E. Evans.  Her mother, sister Elizabeth "Betty" and a younger brother came to live on Grace Street in Herndon when her mother accepted a teaching position in Washington, D.C.  Her brother died at age 4.  Mrs. Evans and two daughters then made their home with Miss Grace Beard who was also a teacher in Washington, D.C.  After completing her education in Washington, D.C., Josephine helped Miss Grace Beard maintain Rock Ridge, a farm and a camp for boys. During her marriage to Horace D. Burns they operated a messenger service between Dulles Airport, Maryland and Washington, D.C.  Josephine also held a position at Northern Virginia Community College, Loudoun Campus.

As a member of Floris Presbyterian Church, Josephine was one of the founding members of what became Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon.  She was President of the Herndon Fortnightly Club and received a 50 year membership pin.

She is survived by a foster son Melvin McLachlan and family and stepchildren Carol Stearns, Sharon Davis and Daniel Burns.

With her sweet smile and gentle nature it was a pleasure to spend time with Josephine.  She was an avid reader and nurtured a beautiful woodland garden of native plants.  She will be sorely missed by her friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 651 Dranesville Rd.,  Herndon, VA 20170 or favorite charity. Friends are invited for visitation at 1:30 PM on Thursday, February 27, 2020 where service will follow at 2 PM at Trinity Presbyterian Church.  Interment Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
