Here's a photo of the amazing Ralph and me in the Situation Room taken in August 2007. I first met him on December 19, 2000 when I was appointed National Security Agency liaison with the White House in 2000. That day in December he asked one of his Sit Room staffers to give me a tour of the main floor above in the West Wing. He was a wizard of technology and also revered by his Sit Room staffers over so many years. On September 11, 2001, he is who first called Sit Room Director Deborah Loewer (Captain, U.S. Navy), who was traveling with President Bush in Florida that morning, to inform her of the first plane hit in New York. Loewer then told Bush. (When the second plane hit, Loewer told Chief of Staff Andy Card who in turn told the President. Loewer told this to me firsthand.) I am so privileged to have known and collaborated with him.

So sorry to hear of Ralph's passing. I had the honor of working with him while he was assigned to the White House Situation Room and considered him as a friend during those times. He did so much to assist the government during times of crisis and all Americans should be proud and appreciative of his quiet, humble and professional support to our country. He was a hero and I salute him and his family. God bless...

Dear Marsha, Bethany, Steven and family ~
I just wanted you all to know what you know already that Ralph was a giant of a man. He was kind, quiet and extremely funny. He was the one you wanted to sit next to at a party even if it was a party for a special little 3 year old. He went out of his way to make people feel comfortable and we will be forever grateful for his intellect and service to our country. I will be for grateful for the love and support you gave to my sister when she was growing up. She loves you all so very much and so do I. Please know that you are in my prayers. I think we are all better people for having known Ralph.

Ralph was more than a neighbor to us he was family! We lived in Fairfax for 22 years and lived on the same street that entire time. Ralph was a very smart and soft spoken man. He had an amazing job at the White House situation room and would never boast about his career and success. He put up with all our funny neighbor adventures and there were many! Ralph We miss you buddy you were one of a kind. A true gentleman and a a wonderful husband and father. Goodbye for now until we meet again.

Deepest condolences to the entire Sigler family. Ralph was a longtime neighbor and a great friend. We will always remember Ralph for his friendliness and love for his family and will miss speaking with him as he was walking Maddie (or as she was “relaxing” on the sidewalk) or as he sat in the front of his house telling Charlie to stop barking at the other dogs who were walking by. It’s funny how simple, everyday things that we take for granted are the most memorable. Ralph will be missed, but not forgotten. I know the entire family is hurting now, but we hope the memories gives you a measure of comfort. Ralph is in a far better place and is safe in the arms of God. Wishing you strength and peace through these difficult times.

My name is Ron White. I had the privilege and honor of serving in the Situation Room for six years with Ralph, from 1981 to 1987. I remember being drawn to Ralph on my first day. He was eager to help me get acclimated to what could be a very intimidating environment for a newcomer. He was kind and had a quiet way of dealing with people. Ralph had a sense of humor and could break the tension whenever necessary. He was totally unflappable, a characteristic so valuable to everyone around him in the Situation Room. We stayed in touch for a few years and although we eventually lost contact, Ralph has always been the first person I would think of whenever those days come up in conversation and that will never change.
Rest in Peace My Friend, for you have left this world a better place than you found it.

I was very saddened to hear about Ralph's passing. He was the Deputy Director of the White House Situation Room when I arrived as Director in April 1987. He epitomized the best of government service: incredibly competent, selfless, hard-working and dedicated. He said something to me one evening that encapsulated his ethos, stating that, "There may be some jobs here that are above my technical or intellectual skills, but there is no job here that is beneath me." He lived that ethic every day, and I am very proud to have known Ralph and served with him.

Ralph how I will miss you. Your actions, your sly sense of humor, your counsel, and your readiness to understand opinions and advise without judgement provided us all lifetime value. Your ability to provide us the big picture on any topic were traits that I’ve appreciated and have applied to my managerial and personal life. To say you served me as a mentor is to inadequately describe the impact you’ve had on my life. Many times, I’ve found myself applying your traits and only afterward, upon reflection, I could trace that action to you.
I can to this day still picture myself walking into your office to brief you on one thing or another watching you carefully remove items from your desktop - keyboard, bowl of paperclips, everything - then spraying and vigorously wiping down your desk while holding your tie to your stomach and fully continuing our conversation.
I am saddened by your passing. Thank you on behalf of many of us for impacting our lives. May your bride and family find comfort and tranquility. May you rest in peace

Ralph you were truly a most humble, caring man that I have ever met. We had visited your home many times, but not often enough. Was looking forward to the family trip this year, these plans were the last words we had spoken. I remember once, you saw me get my morning coffee and you stated, “wow, you take your coffee just like I do”, that statement “connected” us, guess you had to be there. I miss you so much it hurts. Each morning I will raise my coffee cup in your honor, just wishing I was drinking it with you in your kitchen! Rest In Peace.

Dear Marsha,
I am so sorry for your loss and I extend my deepest sympathies to you and your family. I had the profound honor of serving with Ralph in the White House Situation Room during the last years of President Reagan's second term. During tense situations, Ralph was always, and I mean always, a calm voice of reason and advice in what steps to take. His steady demeanor and personality were extremely appreciated during the many days and nights spent at the White House during intense situations involving U.S. National Security and difficult situations involving sensitive foreign interactions. Ralph was the ultimate professional and respectful of everyone around him. He made immense contributions to not only the U.S. Army, but also to the Nation in sensitive operations that will never see the light of day. During my three years at the White House, Ralph was the one constant in an ever changing world. I will miss you, Ralph. I pray for you Marsha, and you family during this time of deep sorrow and sadness.
Ralph was an American hero!

Thank you Gary for writing such an incredible condolence for my brother-in-law. The description of Ralph’s demeanor was so completely accurate. I never met a man that was as calm and rational as Ralph. He truly was an amazing man, none other like him. Thank you for sharing the time you spent with him and acknowledging j”some” of his wonderful traits he possessed.

Dear Marsha and family,
Bob and I are so sad to hear about Ralph’s passing. We thought about him over the years with such fondness- he was a tremendous and dedicated manager and colleague in the WHSR and was the backbone for many for so many years. And, where egos were prominent, Ralph worked diligently and tirelessly behind the scenes. May he rest in peace and may you and your family find strength and comfort in the memories you shared together. Please know that this country was well served by Ralph’s dedication. We will miss you Ralph and we are grateful for your service. Our love to you Marsha and to your entire family. Rosanne and Bob O’Hara, Stonington, CT.

Hey Dad had a rough night just needed to talk to you. What’s been getting me is how you had to spend your last days alone. Nothing in the world should keep love ones from being there at times like that. I’m so sorry that, that happened to you. You deserved a lot better than that. Hospitals need to make changes for that. I’ll talk to you later. Love you Dad Steve

Dear Marsha, Steven, Bethany, Alex, Ben, Collin and Drew,
We are all so lucky to have known and loved dear Ralph. He was always a perfect gentleman, soft-spoken and religiously truthful. One always respected Ralph's point of view because one knew it was carefully thought out, honest and beyond reproach. I think it was because of this that he had such a successful career.
I was at UVA when I first heard of Ralph. Daddy had driven down to Charlottesville because he was very upset that Marsha and Ralph had eloped. He and Mom had so wanted to have a big wedding on the farm--he said why else have a large house and lawn. It wasn't long before we were all very grateful that Marsha had chosen her husband so wisely.
I miss you Ralph and always will. Love, Clint

I’d known Ralph from the moment of that blind date when my friend since childhood, Marsha, met Ralph. I’m known as Cupid and did an excellent match that has lasted 54 years. When I married, we enjoyed good times as a foursome. As busy as Ralph was, he still made time for family and friends. To say he will be missed is an understatement. Rest In Peace.

No matter how much all of us thought that we had won, deep down inside we really knew that he had won. I will always miss you so much Dad until I see you again. Rest In Peace. I love you Dad. Steve
