Ivan was my football teammate for three years at Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh, PA. On offense, he played right tackle, while I played left. On defense, we both played guard in a six-man defensive line. In 1967, our team won the city championship, and in 1968 and 1969, we placed second or third. Ivan was such a nice guy, and I would trust him with anything. I feel so bad about his death, and how I wish I had taken the trouble to renew our friendship.

As a "rival" girls basketball coach, he made it competitive and fun throughout the years. His intensity was respected but his humor off the court was something that made me look forward to games surrounded by visits whether he was coaching or cheering on his girls, particularly Christine.

I worked with Ivan for just a short while, when he was over at Lake Anne, and then saw him often. He was truly an amazing person, and was interested in writing a book. Whenever he posted a submission for the Reston Community Center Newsletter, he did so with pride and always told me what he was saying.
Ivan was a wonderful friend to me, and I enjoyed his company. He was so kind, sincere, honest, funny, and full of stories. I really missed him when he went into the hospital.
My thoughts go out to you, his family. I am so very glad you were able to fully enjoy him for who he was every day of his life and yours.
With sincere condolences,
Jan Bradshaw

Ivan always had a smile and a kind word for everyone; he was a gentle man, and a gentleman. I never saw Ivan mad about something, but you could tell in his writings that he cared about people and the injustices they endured.
I will miss Ivan. Every September, when football season began, while I looked forward to watching the Steelers play, I also looked forward (almost more) to seeing Ivan. Steelers football is now going to be a little more lonesome, a little less enriching.
Rest in Peace my friend.

It was a privilege to serve with Ivan on several Great Banquet weekends, and a true honor to get to serve when he was the men's weekend lay director. Ivan taught many of us how to be better Christians on the weekends he served.
So, Ivan: Please gather some "terrible towels" in heaven to have ready to hand out to the rest of us who also grew up in Steeler country when our time comes!

To my brother in Christ,
I will miss you always seated to my right in our Tuesday morning Bible Study sessions sharing such profound spiritual words of wisdom, spiritual insight into why God Is Love, and spiritual understanding of what God has ordained for us to do with our time hear on earth. You are and always will be for me a wealth of encouragement and symbolize forever what is truly important. Rest well.
I Love You Bro.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Ivan's family and friends at this time of great loss. I knew Ivan through Great Banquet. In the middle of that group of kind and gifted people, he stood out above the crowd - literally and otherwise. I thank God for the gift of his life and witness to so many.

I met Ivan later in life and he was such a delight to me. We enjoyed some wonderful, deep conversations. As a friend he had that rare quality of simply accepting a person peacefully, just as they are. His nimble, wide-ranging mind made every encounter a pleasure. We will miss him so much, but I know that God is pleased at the return of His wise child, and that Ivan is happily arguing with new buddies in his new Home. Ivan could be a bit salty at times. But everything tastes better with the right amount of salt.

Ivan was all about love and understanding in a world that is too often harsh. He was the kind of person who preached the Gospel at all times, but seldom needed words to do it. He brought so many gifts into my life. I truly believe he made me a better person, and I will always be grateful for his abiding friendship. Godspeed, dear friend.

I was at the great banquet #57 during Ivan's talk. He was clearly a man after God's heart. While it's sad to know he's not here on earth, I think it's clear he is rejoicing with his savior.
Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

One of the greatest men I have ever known. I will truly miss his words of encouragement, his concern, his intellect and his wit. A mountain of a man, with a mountainous faith. I’m sure he is with The Almighty cheering for all of us. Love ya Coach, until we meet again.
