Obituary of Julian Jack Steyn

Please share a memory of Julian to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dr. Julian Jack Steyn, 88, of Ashburn, Virginia, passed away in his home on April 24, 2020 after several months of declining health. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 45 years, Stephanie Steyn, as well as children Patrick Steyn, Brendan Steyn, Siobhan King and son-in-law Michael King, and his grandchildren Ryan Bradley, Briana Moneysmith, Adelle Moneysmith, Owen King and Ayla King. He was born to parents Harry Steyn and Frances (Bennett) Steyn, in Dublin, Ireland, and was the older brother of Donald W. Steyn and Sonja Steyn.

A graduate in Engineering of Trinity College Dublin, and with a PhD in Applied Nuclear Physics from the University of Toronto, Julian was an international expert in the Nuclear Energy industry and co-author of “A Brighter Tomorrow: Fulfilling the Promise of Nuclear Energy” in 2006.  He was President Emeritus of the Washington DC consulting firm Energy Resources International, which he co-founded with Michael H. Schwartz in 1989.

Julian had a passion for art and cars. His great room in his Great Falls home where he raised his family was paneled wall to wall with artwork he collected over the course of his life, with the help of his brother Donald, a gallery owner in England.  His garage always had one or two sports cars in various stages of rehabilitation for Sunday drives, his bookshelves were lined with VHS recordings of every Formula 1 race since the 1980s and dozens of automobile books.  He loved driving his Porsches on the track until he was 80,  was convinced that the tiny back seats of his 1986 Porsche 911 “Goldilocks” made it the perfect family car.

The memorial service has been postponed until 2021 when it is safe for friends and family to gather in celebration of his life. To leave tributes and condolences to the family, please visit the website below. In lieu of sending flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Red Cross.
