One of Darryl's many legacies is Vecinos Unidos/Neighbors United in Herndon, VA, which he was instrumental in establishing in 1997. The after-school program continues to this day, helping kids in the Herndon community by providing after-school homework help and other activities. We are proud to continue the work that Darryl and Maria invested so much of their time and love in.
On behalf of all the board members, volunteers, and children at Vecinos Unidos, I offer our profound thanks for the goodness Darryl shared with his communities and our deepest condolences to his family.

I first met Darryl shortly after he was appointed as the Chief of Police in Purcellville, he and another officer stopped by my home and introduced me to him, he wanted to meet some of the people in the community, I offered them a cup of coffee and Darryl made the comment that I was the first to offer him a cup of coffee, such a warm and sincere person and I'm happy that I got to meet him. I also helped with the children on Saturdays behind the Middleburg Bank in Purcellville.

Hard to realize how very suddenly a mood, an outlook and a day can change in a fraction of time with such un-welcomed and overwhelmingly sad, sad news. I am heart broken. Darrell and myself worked tirelessly together for several years, hand and hand on the Bering Glacier and the stories we shared, the chopper flights we commandeered, the pristine mountain tops we walked on, the bonfires we bonded over and the laughs we shared are absolute lore. His work ethic and commitment to the project were legendary as was his heart and his personality. Our research was his annual reprieve from the stress of being a Police Chief first in Herndon, VA and latter finishing out his career as Chief in Purcevllle not far away. I respected him, loved him and will forever cherish our wonderful time together as friends. Be at peace now Big Daddy. You serve on a far better force. I love ya and will miss you for a long time. This one hurts...a lot.

You have always been there for me. Even times when I thought I was in it by myself, you came to my rescue (it was just in your nature). I love you far beyond what words can express and I will always thank God for putting you in my life. Thank you for being a necessary member of the tribe that helped raise me and helped raise a whole community. You’re legacy will continue. Thank you!!!!!!! I will always love and miss you Uncle!! Rest Easy

Heaven is blessed to have Darrel as an angle. He was the kindest man we have ever known. How he loved his children and each and every grandchild of course "His dear Maria". We were blessed to have known such a sweet, good man. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. He can now take care of his dear daughter, Watch over you every day. God Bless
