Debbie and I attended college together. We were sorority sisters and friends. I was actually with Debbie in her apartment as we watched the Challenger spaceship explode. Debbie and I both graduated from Radford University and later we both started second careers as first grade teachers. Through the years we exchanged Christmas cards and eventually reconnected through Facebook. Through our common love of teaching and our school district’s connection with The Teachers College Reading and Writing Institute, Debbie and I met in New York City in the fall of 2019 for an amazing weekend of learning, a show, and fun. We had an amazing time and it seemed like no time had passed—-certainly not 33 years!!!! I did not know that Debbie was sick, but I know she was surrounded by her family. I know she loved her family so much, especially her children. Rest in peace sweet friend.

Dear Tony, Anthony and Cassie:
I taught with your Mom at Kings Park Elementary. Debbie and I were the only staff members who lived in Herndon and I relied on her for rides when my car was not available. One day, I found out during the day that she had car trouble and had paid for an Uber ride all the way to Springfield. It was particularly expensive because it was during peak hours. I asked her why she hadn’t called me and asked for a ride. She knew I left for school early and had been afraid I was already on the road. I assured her I would have just turned around and picked her up! She was so considerate of others and hesitant to put anyone out, but she was always willing to go out of her way to help you.
When I became sick and had to leave school and stay home, Debbie would drop by to say hello, bring a gift from the school, etc. When she was home recuperating from her heart surgery, we met at her beloved Duck Donuts and had a lovely visit.
Anthony and Cassie, she was so proud of you and loved you so dearly. Cassie, she shared your passion for theater. How many times did she see Hamilton?
I was just thinking about your Mom a couple days before she passed. I was hoping she was keeping safe from the virus. I will miss her.
The last few years have been so hard on all of you. I hope the knowledge that you did all you could for her brings you some measure of comfort and that your memories of happier times will help you all keep her spirit alive.
Sincerely, Pat Schreiber
