Joe and I connected through genealogy about 25 years ago through the Minnick family. His grandmother was my grandfather's sister. We enjoyed many good years over the Internet and by phone. I miss talking with Joe. I know that he is meeting all of his ancestors in heaven. Love, Carol Minnick Schatz xoxo

My sincere condolences to Joe’s family. I finally got to know Joe when we both served on a committee at our condo. I am glad I had that opportunity and appreciated his positive contributions to the group.

I remember Joe over the course of his life --- from family visits at Severna Park in early years, visits to my house at Thanksgiving in mid years and finally lunches and visits with Rita. He was always pleasant and always ready to share the great wealth of knowledge he had acquired about our family genealogy. May God Bless Joe.

My husband and I worked with Joe at SSA many years ago. Purely by chance, I came across his obit in the Sun. We all lost contact over the years, so though saddened to learn of his loss, it was good to learn of all his accomplishments throughout his life. Back in the day Joe attended some concerts at the Capital Center with our group of
coworkers, we all enjoyed our music and each other's company. Rest in Peace Joe!

This blue candle is a tribute to my Uncle Joe’s lifelong love of learning and pursuit of many interests. He loved genealogical research and was a great source of family history. I also remember his love of music and his understated sense of humor. Rest In Peace Uncle Joe.

Joe and I had frequent lunches together in the cafeteria of the Library of Congress and once at an Irish pub in Falls Church. He was a font of information about our many East Coast cousins whose names I had heard often mentioned by my grandmother, “Aunt Maggie,” and my Uncle Andy in California. His genealogical research on both the Irish and Scottish sides of his family was truly of epic proportions. Joe was particularly pleased to find out that he could trace his family tree back to a Scottish king. His knowledge, stories, and kind personality will not be forgotten. Requiescat in pace!

On this Memorial Day, I remember all of the many Memorial Day weekends when Joe would faithfully assist Rita and I and others at the Vienna Area Chapter of NOW booth at the Town of Vienna’s Memorial Day Fair. Joe was always supportive of NOW, a “card carrying member” as well as the first to lend a hand wherever needed. Joe was fluent in NOW’s position on issues and helped educate those who stopped by the booth for more information. And during the lulls, our volunteers were entertained with his stories and amazing grasp of history. God bless you, Joe.

Joe, I will always remember you fondly. Many good times together at Rita's deck parties, John's cookouts, Plays and concerts we attended, and our trip with Rita down to visit Cousin Patricia Sackett Jedrick in Bluffton, SC. Lots of wonderful memories. Rest in peace dear soul.

I met Joe in the early '90s at a Judy Bolton fan club meeting in Potter Co, Pennsylvania. It was nice meeting people who shared the same interests. And then a few years later we all met in Baltimore and I drove him home. I'm so sorry you lost him to Covid-19.

So sad to hear about the loss of Joe. We (my husband Larry and I ) always enjoyed spending time with Joe who was a great music sound engineer, a great music supporter, photographer, and gift giver! I didn't know Joe had become sick, and had a dream about him not long ago where he shared a simple message with me. May he rest in peace..Psalm 63:3

This pink candle represents your love of vivid or unusual colors in men's clothing. You had your own unique style, Joe. Not just in clothing, but in the way you lived your life. You always marched to the beat of a different drummer. Bless you on this, your last road trip.

I met Joe through Rita. The three of us often went to animal rescue fundraisers together. I was also honored to be asked to attend a couple of family functions with Joe and Rita. Joe was such a sweet and gentle man. It was always a pleasure to be in his presence. Although I did not know him well, I always enjoyed his company and I will sincerely miss him. God Bless, Joe.

Rita O'Connor and I have been friends since the early 1980s when both of us were presidents of our respective NOW chapters in New Jersey. Whenever National NOW was staging a rally in Washington, D.C., I would stay with Rita in her home in Vienna, Virginia. It was then that I met her cousin Joe. I was always struck by his genial manner, full of humor and quirky stories. But it was his plaid tam that jauntily sat on his head of bushy hair that distinguished himself to me. That hat demonstrated, to me, a man of courageous conviction, whose loss of sight posed no problem in how he faced the world, and contributed to it. Rest in Power and Peace, Joe.
