when first we met
she touched my hand
and smiled
I didn't know her long
I didn't know her well
I barely understood a word she said
but I will always remember her smile...
it lit up the room
when she spoke of her husband and five daughters
it lit up her face with ice cream for dessert
she was a proud woman
a strong woman
a woman with plenty to smile about
a smile
that will forever be remembered... (In Tribute- The Ngo-Eng Family)

My earliest memory of Grandma was when she lived with my family during the years of my elementary school education. I remember fondly that Grandma loved ice cream. She used to get so excited when she heard the music coming from the local ice cream truck that she would rush to give me money so that I could run to buy ice cream for the two of us. I also remember how kindly she took care of me as a child, especially when I had chickenpox in the first grade.
More recently, my family and I have tried to visit her in Virginia at least once a year--my parents and my brother, pictured in these photos, would usually visit more often. Although we didn't get to spend much time with her during these visits, the memories were always tender and joyful as we attempted to feed Grandma what we thought was her favorite foods. Instead of eating by herself, she would always kindly offer us some food. We also tried our best to get her to remember us, which often led to funny experiences. And even with advanced dementia, Grandma still had a sweet tooth--only it was chocolate at the time and no longer ice cream.
My family and I are all very sad we did not have the opportunity to visit her one last time this year, as we had originally planned for March (due to COVID-19). We are comforted by the fact that she led a full life and went to heaven peacefully. You will be missed, Grandma! You are the best Grandma anyone could have ever asked for!
Sincerely,
The Pham family

Wish I could have visited you more often, just like your visits to us when we were little. It was always fun to have you in our home, as we would then be treated well and have candies!
I am glad that I was able to come and took these pics with you, Vivi and my mom! You are so beautiful and your smiles will carry me on all my days!
I love you and will miss you! Phung Ngo-Burns

My favorite memories of Ba Ngoai was of her taking all six of us to eat Pho in Saigon while our mom and dad were at work. Her visits always brought us so much joy as she spoiled all of us with food and money. I knew that we were her respite from the stress of running a business as well. Later when our aunts had their families, we shared her with our cousins and did not get to see her as much. It was great, though, to have been the "first" and to have had her to ourselves for a while. While I attended Gia Long, I could always count on her to slip me some money if I got hungry and wanted some street food before or after school. Being taught by mom to never take advantage of Ba Ngoai's generosity, I did not often approach her, but I knew that if I needed to, she was there for me.
I had the privilege to spend quality time with her while she was still of sound mind when she was living in Houston in 2004(?) and again in Reston between 2005-2010. She told me of her childhood when she had to fend for herself as she had lost her mother in her early teens. She told me of her mischiefs to make a little extra money from her dad for her dowry when she ran errands or conducted business for him. She was strong, self reliant, resourceful, and so very full of faith in her Gods. It was of great distress to her that due to failing health that she could not offer her gifts to her Gods later in her life. Her happiest memories were when Granddad asked for her hand in marriage. He was so handsome, educated, and came from a respected family. She also enjoyed the many times when she was joined by her many women friends in their religious practices, especially the times when she was the directress of the ceremonies.

Visited Ba Ngoai, summer 2019. Four generations first born and first born girls. We, strong women, are her legacies.
