We met Bob on a Queen Mary transatlantic cruise in 2007, such a great guy with amazing stories and excellent company. We were lucky enough to spend dinner with him each night before he retired to the Commodore lounge. We have just come back from a visit to the US and visited Arlington for the first time, we were so sad to see that he had passed away but not surprised at all that he made it past his 100th birthday and it was lovely to be able to pay our respects. One of life's great characters and no doubt he'll be entertaining others wherever he is now!

I used to live on Millikens Bend Rd for a few years and would see Bob walking his German Shepard. I spoke with him and got to know him in a neighborly kind of way. Over time we became better acquainted and Bob told me more and more of his combat exploits during WW II. He had an unbelievably sharp memory and recollection of his time during the war. I only wished that I had been able to have him sit down with me and record these stories as they were incredible. Bob was a wonderful man and one I wished I had been able to know better. He was a true American hero to me and one of what truly was the "greatest generation". I recall our conversations quite frequently and was deeply saddened to just read that he had passed this past May. To his family and friends, I can only imagine how sad you must be, but I'm sure Bob is kicking up the dust in Heaven and having a ball. Rest well my friend and thank you for your contribution in saving the world from evil. Fly high and free my friend.

Bob during Veterans Day ceremonies at Arlington in 2013. My buddy and fellow aviator: may you keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down. Throw a nickel on the grass. May God bless.

Our dear friend, clear skies and fly high:
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air . . .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Col Bob was my friend and I loved the time spent with him and being in his presence. As commander of the Loudoun county VFW post 1177 I would like to convey my deepest sympathies to his wonderful family during this time of reflection. Peace be with you all.
