My condolences to your family. May you find the strength in yourselves, each other, and your faith in these difficult times of losing a loved one. Trudy was and always will be loved by so many! She lit up a room with her presence, her humor and her hospitality. I remember visiting her and Frans at their home and witnessing the joy they felt in sharing stories over a wonderful meal. Not only did Trudy bring humor to the conversation, she brought deep and thoughtful questions that helped me many times discover new things about myself and all my possibilities. I am so honored to have met Trudy and will always treasure our times together. My heart is with you.

Dear Ingrid and Marc.
We send you our dearest condolescens at the passing away of your mother.
Although we only met her once in The Hague last year, we had a very sympathetic impression of her.
These Corona-times are difficult to have a funeral ceremony without all family and friends. But we still hope it has been a good commemoration.
Kind regards.
Corine and Marius

Dear Trudy,
I remember going into several HEMA stores across the Netherlands to find the coveted 'washandjes' which you distributed among your friends in Ashby Ponds. What effort went into getting the ones that could meet your approval, Whatsapp-ing you the different options. One is amazed how many there are! But what fun to have been able to help you in this most important task. And don't forget the drop (liquorice) Ingrid and I had to buy in bulk and smuggle into the US. I'll miss doing these little particular chores you appreciated so much. I'll miss you. Love, Bob

X

It was sad to hear of the passing of Trudy Hagen. I was one of her students in the early 1990's at the Foreign Service Institute when our small class was learning Dutch on the way to Embassy and Consulate assignments in The Netherlands. She brought her lively spirit into every class, making all of them enjoyable. Her style and spirit were infectious, and we all became family as the months progressed. She offered to organize a self-funded trip for the class to go to The Hague for a week-long immersion into the Dutch language. No English was to be spoken once we got off the airplane. (We did sneak some in when we were in the Embassy building, but nowhere else!) We experienced it all - using public transit, dining on the real Dutch foods we had only read about in Rosslyn, interacting with locals. SO helpful when returned a few months later to our actual assignments in-country. It was very comfortable, and our preparation by Trudy was so important as we did our diplomatic duties. After losing touch for many years, it was a pleasure to meet and chat with Trudy again at the Audrey Moore Recreation Center (at Wakefield Park), where she was a volunteer room attendant at the fitness center, making sure that those who entered had paid their admission. Thanks Trudy for your excellent teaching and introducing us to The Netherlands. After thirty years we still go back every few years to visit friends we made then. And it is nice to quickly switch back into speaking Dutch - you trained us well! Rest in peace.

Dear Ingrid and Marc, I was so sorry to read Trudy's obituary in the Washington Post. I saw here in February and she told me the cancer was back. However, she seemed to be in good spirits and we had a few laughs.
I know she will be greatly missed and my thought are with you.
Sincerely,
Gerd Ritchie (former colleague FSI)

My fondest memories of Trudy are of our time together volunteering for the Obama Administration’s Presidential Correspondence Office. We had both worked and retired from the Federal Government and enjoyed keeping involved through our volunteer work. Trudy hailed from Holland and I am from Germany which created a bond. Each year we were determined to reach the 200 volunteer hours that would guarantee us the invitation to the White House Christmas party which was a dream for both of us. Of course Trudy always talked Frans into driving us there. Trudy and Frans loved to cruise around the world and she always had exciting stories to tell. Trudy was a great friend always ready with a good story and a good laugh. I am sad that she has left us and will truly miss her, but I’d like to think that Frans is waiting for her and they will waltz together again.

Trudy was a terrific gal and although I only knew her for about 5yrs here at Ashby Ponds, I thought of her as a dear friend. When possible we did enjoy walking around the campus together or comparing when and where we went. She fought a gallant fight with this cancer and even about 3 weeks prior her passing, she told me she would fight until the end. I assured her I would keep her in my prayers. We all will miss her smile and enjoyment of life. Sibyle Jenks
