Papa, always had that little extra for everyone around him. No matter who it was! Whether it was a simple smile, love, words of support, prayer, some needed discipline, financial or just a hug. That's the man I've known and loved for more than half my life. The man that gave that love to my children and I know to so many others. I was blessed....my girls were blessed .... to grow up knowing how good men love and live!

To the family and friends of Gilberto Amaya, my sincerest condolences. I am so very grateful to have met and worked with him in and out of the Census Bureau. I learned so much about his work to elevate the experience of Afro-Latinos and I was inspired by the fact that he had been doing this work for so many years before. I hadn't appreciated how much of a pioneer he was in that space and I am grateful to have crossed paths with him. Gilberto's example will live through all of us.

My memory of Gilberto was of a "gentle giant!" When Gilberto spoke, you listened. In my few interactions with him at church, he was always smiling and kind. In one meeting at church, I recall he was contributing to the discussion based on his international experience in development, and his commitment and passion was evident.
Gilberto and Rachel, a beautiful couple, were dedicated to each other and to the Lord. Rest in peace Gilberto. You will be missed.

Querido Mosses.

I was deeply saddened to learn about Gilberto passing away. My sincere condolences to Rachel, their children, and the Amaya family.
Almost three decades ago, we met in Honduras where Giberto was leading the field operations of the "Programa de Tecnologia Rural" (PTR), one of the largest programs in Central America working in support of rural communities. I was so impressed with Gilberto's work that we invited him to join Appropriate Technology International (ATI), an NGO where he worked for several years. As a member of the ATI team, it was beautiful and inspiring to sense his commitment to the communities of small producers that he supported in Latin America and Africa. Cocoa and coffee farmers had a great ally in him.
I have always remembered the day that he shared with me the story of the Garifuna Community. It was a wonderful gift to learn about his people's courageous journey to remain free over centuries of adversity. But it was even more beautiful to learn about Gilberto's efforts to enable the new generation to identify with the Garifuna community's core values.
Gilberto was a great colleague and a friend. He had a steady presence that would always meet you with wise advice and his beautiful smile. He will be missed dearly.

Dear Ms. Amaya (Rachel), and family,
I am so grateful to have had an opportunity to have met you, Gilberto's family and to have worked with him on ensuring Garifuna representation and empowerment through the Census. Gilberto was so well respected by the Census community he engaged, both for his intellect and gracious demeanor. I have known him to be a kind, humble man who could command the attention of an entire room without barely raising his voice. He was extremely proud of his family and loved the grands which he made sure to mention whenever we would talk. I will not soon forget Mr. Amaya, gentle giant that he was. He will be missed beyond measure by all of us who have had the privilege of walking with him on his meaningful journey on earth. Thank you for sharing him with the world and allowing us to learn from his gentle voice. We are all better off as a society because of him. May God continue to bless you and the family.

Goodbye Gilberto
I knew you for many years on the Fairtrade America Board.
Your thoughts and insights helped us address the many Development challenges we all faced.
Your work in Cocoa helped us define our global strategy. Thank You!
I am so sorry that we never had the chance for the visit to origin in El Salvador, that was your idea.
It would have been a wonderful experience to understand your project, and the many challenges of growing a new target cacoa market.
Thank You for all that you have accomplished - we will all miss you. Be peaceful.

Condolences to the Amaya family and a tribute to this great man.
Those of us working in development assistance mourn the passing of one of our best.
Whether it was in the World Bank, USAID, The Inter-American Development Bank, in UN fora, in NGO’s; Gilberto’s presence lightened up every meeting. He was an outstanding professional but even more, he was an extraordinary person with highest moral values and principles. His mission was to help others and to ensure that, regardless of their beliefs, skin color, nationality and gender, they were treated fairly.
He was impressive both in stature and in how his booming voice commanded the attention of people of authority --- be they Ministers of Agriculture or senior officials in development assistance organizations. On the other hand, he was equally impressive through the humility and curiosity with which he approached poor farming families in isolated villages and showed a keen interest both in their wellbeing and in their culture.
With his superb mastery of languages, he had this special aura of a suave “Cosmopolitan” but he never lost sight of his roots in the Afro -societies of the Caribbean and Latin America. We admired him for the knowledge he shared about this culture and we admired him for the time he devoted to assuring recognition in international and national settings for this large community.
Gilberto's technical expertise and upright stand on social and environmental issues led to his serving on leading bodies and organizations devoted to such causes. Important among them was his appointment to the Independent Consultation and Investigation Mechanism of the Inter-American Development Bank. We greatly enjoyed working with him and we always benefited from his views. Assignments like this were important to Gilberto because he could help demonstrate ways by which big institutions must make an effort to better understand and act upon the troubles and pain experienced by the less fortunate for whose development these organizations had been created in the first place.
Gilberto also served on the Board of Fairtrade America, another organization with the goal to help marginalized families and communities in developing countries to improve their livelihoods. And there were numerous other important programs, NGOs and faith-based initiatives that he supported and coached throughout the years with his expertise and enthusiasm.
With Gilberto, the Garifuna and the planet lost a leader, an example for us to follow , a wonderful human being.
We mourn the loss of a great friend.
Rest in Peace, dear Gilberto !
Werner Kiene on behalf of former colleagues and friends of Gilberto in the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, the United Nations, German Development Assistance, Fairtrade America, The Ford Foundation

Gilberto, May you rest in peace.
To your beautiful family our most sincere condolences.
I managed the PTR Project for USAID for a while where I had the honor of working with Gilberto. It was Gilberto and people like him that made PTR work for Garifunas as well as the general population of Honduras. With Gilberto I learned to love casabe and all things Garifuna and to appreciate his skills as a talented mechanical engineer. I am thrilled that he went on to use those talents and his many interpersonal skills for the benefit of the developing world.
Years later living in Northern Virginia close to Reston I ran into Gilberto at various barbecues at mutual friends. And I am so glad I was able to visit with Gilberto and his family at their home in Reston last year. We had a great time reminiscing and sharing ideas.

To my Dear Sister in Christ Rachel, your children and extended families, I send my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your husband and father Gilberto. It was an honor and privilege 20yrs ago to meet you both at Worship. Rachel my dear, I’m confident that your Hubby was escorted to The Throne by Guardian Angels chosen by The Father. I’m also confident that Gilberto is resting in peace and sheltered in God’s Hands. Gilberto has now entered in the Mansion prepared for him in The Best House I know. You and children be comforted knowing that The Triune God will guide you through it all.
Before I close, let me share a wonderful true story. My former MLK Pastor Clarence Davis had requested of Gilberto and me to head up a ministry of purchasing new Bibles for the Sanctuary. Gilberto was the leader of the Ministry and requested of me to assist him in tracking the purchase and delivery of the new Bibles which I did. When the Bibles arrived, Gilberto called a meeting with me to execute how we were going to label the Bibles and suit up the pews with them. He proceeded with an executed plan and presented it to Pastor Davis which was graciously highly approved and the Sanctuary was donned with the new Bibles. I call that organized leadership and awesome service to God. Gilberto was truly an Ambassador for Christ.
Rachel, I dedicate Psalm 5:3 to you. Look Up Every morning my friend. My Condolences to you and family. God Bless you bountifully. Much love, your Sister in Christ, Donna Davis Wilmot.
