I was thinking of Mrs. Cotton today and was saddened to hear of her passing but overjoyed to learn of her fulfilled life. I first met Mrs. Cotton as a first grader at Dogwood Elementary. She carried herself with such poise and confidence but was always gentle and kind to her students. Kids would see her in the hallway and flock to get a hug. Her smile could bring happiness to anyone's day and the way she spoke commanded the utmost attention. I learned a lot from her as a child and I am so glad she got to share her love with so many.

I’ll always remember Opal Lene as my little sister at Dunbar High school in BrokenBow, Okla. and at Langston University, Langston, Oklahoma.
Opal was the receptionist at my husband Leicle Bostic’s and my wedding. Indeed she was a wonderful Christian woman and a wonderful friend❤️.
All of us will miss her, until we meet her again with our Lord Jesus Christ!
A friend always,

I was so fortunate to have Mrs. Cotton or "Mrs. C." as my mother-in-law. Over the past 16 years, there was never a time I didn't feel her friendship and love, as Joey's girlfriend and now wife. Mrs. C. had a special spirit that was evident in everything she did. I especially admired her strength and courage these past several months and witnessed the depth of her fighting spirit and bravery, something she passed onto Joey.
We laughed a lot together and often discussed political, historical, and cultural issues and just happened to agree on most of them. I will miss calling her for recipe and cooking advice, as well as listening to stories about Joey's boyhood.
Mostly, I will miss the love I felt each and every time we spoke or saw each other. I will carry these warm memories in my heart forever.
Rest in peace, Mrs. C. I will take care of your son now.
The other "Mrs. C."

I will start by expressing how sad I am, and the emptiness thatI feel. I have been doing a great deal of reminiscing. While in California it was so fun to be able go to the duplex and hang out with Aunt opal and Uncle U., This was before children. I remember when we found out that we were going to have baby cousin. OMG so excited we had not been around alot of babies. Wow, then it was a little boy...it was like having a human doll. Oh gosh, Joey you had to put up with alot from us. Who got to hold you. Feed you change , yep diaper. Then guess what years later. Yippee another baby. A little girl. As cousins we enjoy, Thanksgiving in Palo Alto, and Christmas in San Jose. Hikes, backyard barbecue's. Museum visits, trips to the beach. Always the most caring and loving heart. A mother, grandmother. Always talked about her grandchilden with so much pride and love. A sister , sister n law, my Aunt opal I love you. I will forever hear you laugh and see your smile
The beloved wife Op. of my Uncle U.

The Cotton family have been our next door neighbors since we moved into our home in the late 1970s. Our two sons were friends with Joey and Nina, they rode the bus and then walked to school together and learned a lot from each other. We are the same age as Opal and Ulysses and so our four children always addressed us as Mr. and Mrs. not by our first names. We always knew we could count on each other to look out for our homes and children. Opal's cooking was delicious and she always provided our family with her famous pecan pies for the holidays. We loved watching Aliyah grow up to be an intelligent, beautiful young woman that her grandparents were so proud of. Opal was a part of our lives for over 40 years and we will miss her everyday.

Mom,
One of my most cherished memories is of you, Nina, and I in the car in California. I think it was a brown Pontiac LeMans, but I'm not sure, not a seat belt in sight. Your favorite song at the time coming on the radio--The Emotions, "The Best of My Love." You said, "Joey, turn that up! Oooh! That's my song!" I'll never forget it. The sheer joy and love of music that came over you was infectious. I have always loved music a little more since that day in '77. You and I danced and sang (I didn't look back at Nean) all the way to Thrifty's. The subject of that song personifies you, Mom. You always gave the best of your love to everyone you knew, especially family and friends.
You and I had a special bond. It was just you and me for a few years in California. Dad was working a lot, and Nina not yet born. Remember I used to love your hair when you wore a Natural (Afro)? I have such fond memories of learning, laughing, dancing, and yes, eating as many crabs as possible. Thank you for always expecting the best from me. I didn't always measure up, but you loved me all the same. Always!
And finally, Mom, I will always treasure the cooking tips and advice that you shared with me in your later days. You were so excited to share that knowledge with me. It made me feel closer to you. Nina and I agree that you were the best mother ever! I can't miss you that much because it feels like you are still with me. Always.
Until we speak again, I love you Mommy. Rest in peace.
--Your loving son, Joey

Aunt Opal was such a Beautiful, Kind, Caring and Loving person! From the first time that my Wife (LaJuana) and I met Aunt Opal at the Cotton Family Reunion she showed such a genuine concern for us and how we were feeling. We felt loved each and every time we saw her. She was an absolute Joy to be around, always so complimentary, at some points causing us to blush! Once we had our daughter (Cierra), the caring from Aunt Opal was extended to her. Cierra was truly fond of Aunt Opal and very broken up after we told her of her passing. She loved the personal conversations they shared together. Though we didn't get to see Aunt Opal and Uncle U as much as we would've liked, the time we did spend was so special to us! We all are going to miss the beautiful Lady Aunt Opal was in the flesh, but we are strong in our belief that she will be watching over us from above with a caring smile. All of our Prayers and Condolences to Uncle U, Nina, Joey, Aliyah and the other members of Aunt Opal's Family! My Mom (Betty Cotton) also asked that I pass on her Condolences and Prayers to All.
Love Always, the Denver Cottons (Kendall, LaJuana and Cierra)
