A tribute to My Aunt Gert
Ok so technically not "my aunt" by blood but mine through faith in
Jesus. And technically not an Aunt but a sister in Christ
but in my heart and in my story and in her legacy to my family and me,
she will always be Aunt Gert.
I can't remember a time without Aunt Gert and Uncle Don but
I definitely remember some amazing times together. In my
old brain age fog, the first memories are of being allowed to
wake up early on trips to Nags Head to adventure to Winks
to buy a newspaper. My little legs flying along beside Aunt Gert
and my mind and mouth traveling at 100 mph... "why is there
sand?,” “why do we need a newspaper?,” “where did the crabs
come from?,” “who made the shells?,” “How much further?,” “Why
does Monday come before Tuesday?,” “Why can't we live here all
year?,” “How did you meet my mom and dad?,” and a billon more questions.
I can't remember a single answer or if I even gave her time
to respond, but I do know I was loved.
I remember going to the Duggan's house on the sound and
getting to go on boat rides with the older kids and long
walks when the boat stopped working. A trip to the
mountains during the fall and is freezing at night.
A trip to WVA and cutting my finger on Donald's pocket knife.
I can't remember all the details, but I do know I was loved.
I remember when Aunt Gert and Uncle Don moved into our
neighborhood in Greenbriar. I thought we would see them a lot more but now that I'm older, I get how hard it is to stop and spend time together.
I do remember Uncle Don coaching me in Elementary-Middle
school in both softball and basketball and Aunt Gert supporting
the team. I remember summers with Dianne being goofy
middle school girls and Aunt Gert letting us be us. I
don’t remember which summers or how old we were, but I
do know I was loved.
I remember in high school being in charge of leading a
devotion on Jesus being the light of the world and sitting at
their table in Greenbriar, searching Scripture and Aunt Gertie Uncle Don
helping me layout a devotion, that I needed to hear even
more than the youth I was leading. I don't remember all
the scripture used, but I do know I was loved.
I remember wanting a long yellow dress for prom and Aunt Gert
agreeing to make it for me. She worked long and hard and
quickly on it. I can't remember much about the prom or
my date, but I do know I was loved. (and I looked like a princess, which was a miracle for a "tomboy" sports kid!)
I remember when my world was falling apart in college, I would call
Aunt Gert and asked if I could come to the lake. She always said
yes, never asked any questions, feed me well, and allowed me just
to "be." I can't remember what had me so down, but I do know
I was loved.
I got busy with adult life, and the visits were less. Usually, just
a quick passing at Christmas or a crossing at mom and dad's
on the sound. Then Uncle Don's funeral, Sonny Boys' funeral, dad's
funeral. These times were hard and sad, but I do know I was
loved.
You see Aunt Gert loved Jesus and when you love Jesus you just
can't help loving others--that questioning child, that mischievous
adolescent, that messy youth, that wandering young adult, that
wife/mother--you see I saw Jesus through Aunt Gert because
I experienced, felt, and knew I was loved!
Thank you, Aunt Gert. I should have told you before, my prayer
is you knew it and that one day we will be together again and I
can share with all of heaven how well I was loved by my
Aunt Gert.
