I am so sorry to learn of Lou's passing. He was a lovely man.
My heart goes out to the whole family, but especially to you, dear Ella, widowed for the second time.
May you find comfort from your loving family and fond memories, as I am still trying to do since my Jim's death Feb.9, 2019. If I lived in VA, I'd be with you for the funeral, but Indiana is so far--especially in this difficult time of Covid concerns. I am praying fervently for all the Delisios and Kuhns who surely love Lou dearly.
fondly and with deep sympathy

It has been a privilege to know Lou over the 20+ years he was married to my treasure of a friend, Ella. I will forever be grateful for the constant kindness he showed my husband, Bill, as Bill was having some ongoing serious medical issues. And the touching handwritten letter he sent me after Bill passed is a gift I will always keep in my memory box. Lou loved God, his wife and extended family, his many friends, his beautiful home, and his beloved country. He will be missed and remembered in so many ways. Thank you, Lou. And I will always be here for you, Ella.

Sending our love from Texas. It's never a good time to lose someone you love, but it is tempered a bit when they had a life well lived. I remember how fun it was to be with Uncle Lou and all his brothers. Watching them tease and laugh with each other was a joy. We are very sorry for your loss.
Love,
Bob and Darlene Waters

James E. Delisio posted a condolence

A note from the other Jim Delisio, the son of Lou’s oldest brother James.
Reading Uncle Lou’s obituary, I was pleased to see that his work with the Air Force spy satellite program was acknowledged. He could only allude to it over the years, but I always felt that he had done a lot more than he let on.
In later years, after some of the early satellite work had been declassified, he sent a few clippings to my father, and included a note that said Lou had worked with many of the people mentioned. But no details. After my father and I read everything, he asked me about them. And I said to my father “based on this, Uncle Lou was involved in some really neat stuff, very highly classified.”
My father liked to tease him occasionally and ask about the spy satellites. (Older brother stuff.) Lou’s response was an innocent look, and he would “Oh, I don’t know anything about that.”
He played a significant role in the development of the satellites nicknamed “Big Birds”.
These really did make the Soviet Union sweat and were one of the main reasons that the US felt comfortable negotiating nuclear arms reduction deals with the Soviets.
That was why in the late 1960s and early 1970 when stationed at Vandenburg Air Force Base in California, he would fly east periodically and would spend the night at our home in Levittown, NY.
Mom always had extra Drakes coffee cakes when he came, which he was very fond of, and could not get in California. He would easily eat 5 or 6 for breakfast before leaving the next morning to drive to what we now know was Perkin-Elmer corporation in Connecticut. None of us knew at the time that Perkin Elmer built the controls and optics for the Big Birds.
Lou never told us the reason for the trips, just that it was work related. At least now we understand the secrets he carried every day. We just liked having him visit. And he and my father would talk sports and politics late into the night, since Lou was on California time... The rest of us had to go to bed.
As a side benefit of these projects, the Space Shuttle’s payload bay was sized to carry a Big Bird. Which made it large enough to carry the Hubble Space Telescope. The Hubble chassis is very similar to the chassis for the Big Bird.
And the efforts to reduce the size and weight of the spy satellites spurred development of digital photography which has led us, for better or worse, to selfies…
His work aided in the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union, and before that, provided the information needed for the US to keep the Soviet Union in check. It has been called a balance of terror, but the result is that all of us are still here. Without the Big Birds, the Cold War could have been far more dangerous.
Thank you, Uncle Lou. I wish you could have gotten credit for all your work sooner.
Perhaps someday a serious author will write the whole story and give proper credit to all involved…
