Alice O’Donnell Doherty Williams, 84, of Oakton, Virginia, was born to eternal life on July 18, 2020.
She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Grace O’Donnell, her brothers John and Terence O’Donnell, and her husbands Frank J. Doherty and Harold E. Williams.
She leaves her children Frank (Jere) Doherty, Alicia Doherty and Catherine (John) Winkert; siblings Grace (Ken) Hatton, Thomas (Marion) O’Donnell and Johanna Gross; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, many beloved nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to Alice’s loving caregivers, especially Cynthia Johnson.
Alice graduated from Marymount College, Tarrytown, New York. She worked as a second grade school teacher in Albany and New York City. Later in life, she worked for the Fairfax County Public School System.
She traveled to many countries around the world and enjoyed spending summers in Southampton, New York, where she often hosted her children and grandchildren.
Throughout her life she was active in church and civic affairs, including serving as president of the Crestwood Council of the Ladies of Charity; president of the Oakton Women’s Club; president of the Vintage Ladies; and as an active member of the Northern Virginia Widowed Persons Service. She volunteered as an usher at Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts.
Alice was a parishioner of St. Mark Catholic Church, 9970 Vale Road, Vienna, Virginia, where a Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at noon on Thursday, July 23, 2020, with Rev. Patrick Holroyd officiating. Due to the parish’s rules during the pandemic, please wear a face covering if you attend. A video recording of the Mass will be available through adamsgreen.com.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at Adams Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, Virginia. Deacon John Allen will lead a Service of the Word at 6:30 p.m.
The family will also receive friends prior to the funeral Mass at St. Mark Church, beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2020. Interment will be at noon on Friday, July 24, 2020 at Culpeper National Cemetery. Due to National Cemetery restrictions during the pandemic, attendance at the interment will be limited to family members.
