We will miss Arleen's spunky personality very much. She and Randy were wonderful neighbors. We are grateful that Arleen is no longer in pain and that she is reunited with Randy-- but we will miss them both very much. Our thoughts go out to the their family.

Arlene and Randall were our dear friends and former neighbors for many years. My deepest condolences to the Flournoy family with the passing of your Aunt Arlene who was loved by all. She brought such joy and happiness to everyone she encountered. I will miss her phone calls, her laughter, her jokes, her tears, her stories, her smile that lit up a room, and the essence of her life. She gave of herself to so many people and asked nothing in return. She loved volunteering in the community and helping others. Arlene had such inner strength and courage to battle her illness for so many years without ever complaining despite it all. It’s hard to fathom both Arlene and Randall are now gone from this life. I take comfort knowing they are reunited again with God, no longer suffering or in pain. I will miss you forever and will always remember your kindness, love of life, God, country, family, friends, football, and your special beach house in the OBX. Applegate Drive will never be the same without you there. I'm so thankful and blessed to have been able to celebrate your last birthday on earth with you. RIP Arlene with your beloved Randall. Love and God Bless, Bev VH

As a fellow “regular” at the Reston Hospital Infusion Lab, I can attest to Arlene’s reliable cheerfulness and good humor. She was a sweet lady who always had a smile and joke. She was diligent about her work in the gift shop, and she really did consider the hospital her extended family. Arlene, no more needles, only peace and your beloved husband for you! Tribute for Arleen Gillespie: from Jeanne Midgett
Arleen Vandemark Gillespie (Vandy to her oldest friends) and I met over 50 years ago. We began our Federal Government careers in the same office at the IRS and quickly became friends. Over the years our friendship grew close. We laughed and cried and shared many wonderful times together. We took many trips to Newburgh, NY to visit her parents and brother Lester, who passed away a few years ago We took an overnight mule ride into the Grand Canyon and slept in a bunk house by the Colorado River (no one can tell that story like Vandy); we took a last minute vacation together to Puerto Rico where we stayed in an old house she heard about on the beach (no AC but a great price!); and we attended a wedding of dear friends in Providence, RI where the motel we were staying in caught on fire and we had to be evacuated at 1 AM in the morning. These are just a few of our adventures. Then she met Randy Gillespie. They met while she was working as a volunteer at Travelers Aid at Dulles Airport. It was not long before all she talked about was Randy. They soon got married and settled in Sterling, VA. They loved their Scotty dogs, meeting their amazing neighbors, and spending time at their beach house in Kitty Hawk, NC. Vandy would light up the room when she entered, she never met a stranger, and she had a heart of gold and would do anything for her friends Sadly, she lost her husband Randy a few weeks ago. I will miss them both. May they rest in peace together.

The OP Infusion Center at Reston Hospital Center will forever be saddened by the loss of Arlene Wanda Gillespie. Arlene was a devoted volunteer at RHC for over 30 years. Per Arlene when she interviewed for the volunteer job she was asked where she wanted to work. She stated "Well I talk to much, cry to easily and tell a lot of jokes" so I think I should work in the gift shop....thus where she volunteered till the Spring of 2020. Arlene was well known to the RHC Infusion Center where we administered blood products to her for over 10 years. Each Tuesday Arlene would go to Registration and visit David then the OP Lab and be greeted by Mike or Pauline....and of course she would have a joke to tell then grace us with her presence on Thursdays. She always inquired to our steady regular patient's how they were feeling with a smile on her face. Arlene was an avid Redskins fan, loved her high powered Coke and good old country music. She brought so much joy to all and never met a stranger she could not talk to or cheer up. Unfortunately Arlene lost the love of her life, Randy, several months ago. She recently said to us that other than Randy, his devoted niece and nephew Ginger and Tyler her only family was her Reston Hospital family and dear friends. She will be truly missed as well as her dedication to Reston Hospital Center which speaks volumes of her live and how she lived out our mission statement "Above all else we are committed to the care of human life" Arlene Pete and I will miss you but know that you are now at peace with your beloved Randy.
