Catherine Driscoll Shirer Rafferty (born August 20, 1943) passed away peacefully at home on October 11, 2020.

She was the daughter of Raymond and Martha Shirer, and eldest of four siblings: Susan Shirer Burkett, Arthur Shirer II, Rae Shirer Gainey. She is survived by her siblings and 4 children: Kerry Michael Rafferty, Krista Ann Rafferty Romero, James Joseph Rafferty, Jr, and Gillian Rafferty Martin; and 8 grandchildren. She is survived by many loving relatives and friends Coast to Coast and locally in North Carolina and Virginia. Cathe was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, and a devoted friend to many. She raised the family in Barrington, IL; Denton, TX; and Great Falls, VA; and finally retired in Wilmington, NC. She was a Realtor in Northern Virginia for over 20 years and was extremely active in the communities where she lived, taking volunteer positions with local organizations including Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Newcomers Club, American Cancer Society, and the Wrightsville Beach Turtle Project. As a long-time active member of the Freedom Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was particularly proud of her involvement in the Scholarship program that helped support educational initiatives. Upon retirement she was also a regular attendee of the Stamp Defiance Chapter of DAR in Wilmington, NC.

The funeral service will be at Christ the King Lutheran Church, in Great Falls, VA, on Friday, October 23rd, 2020, and will be laid to rest at Arnon Cemetery in Great Falls, VA. Services are not open to the public due to Covid-19 restrictions. For those whose lives she has touched, there will be a Celebration of Life in the future. The family is very grateful for your prayers and condolences, and requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made in honor of Cathe to VA DAR State Scholarship program.
