Obituary of Peggy Joyce O'Connell

Please share a memory of Peggy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Peggy Joyce O’Connell, 85, of Alexandria, Virginia passed away November 6, 2020 at Fairfax Hospital.  Peggy was born January 30, 1935 in Bloomington, Illinois to John and Ruth Graning.

Peggy met and married the love of her life Thomas (Mick) Francis O’Connell Jr. at 18 and together they had four beautiful children.  After raising their children and watching them obtain personal and professional success, Peggy and Mick settled in Houston, Texas until Mick’s sudden passing in 1987.  In 1988, Peggy moved to Alexandria, Virginia to be closer to her daughter’s family.  There, she enjoyed success and fulfilment as a real estate agent for over 25 years.

Peggy was a social butterfly with a big, bright smile whose favorite pastime was enjoying the company of her many friends and family.  She was a selfless soul who took a genuine interest in the lives of those around her and started most conversations with “what’s new with you?”.  She had a keen intelligence that she kept sharp with daily crosswords. She was an avid golfer in her younger years and an ace at cards.  Lunches with her best friends were the highlight of her week and she looked forward the most to her monthly bridge club get togethers.

Family was at the core of her happiness.  Her favorite role in life was as a grandmother and great-grandmother.  She spent time every year with her family in Texas and every holiday was full of family, friends and love.  As her grandchildren grew into adulthood, she made sure to attend every graduation and wedding.  Even in her later years, her family remembers her as a funny, spunky character whose caring spirit never seemed to age.

In 2016, Peggy was diagnosed with stage IV Lung cancer.  She was determined to fight, and resolved to beat the enormous odds against her.  After several rounds of chemotherapy and Immunotherapy, she was declared cancer free in 2018.  She was extremely proud to have survived to be able to meet and spend time with her first great-granddaughter, whom she doted on.  This past summer, Peggy was diagnosed with an aggressive infection.  She spent several months in and out of the hospital and rehab, always fighting with a positive attitude and the goal of meeting her youngest great-granddaughter and spending the holidays with family and friends again.  Unfortunately, Peggy developed complications from her illness, and passed away peacefully on November 6, 2020 with her daughter and granddaughter at her side.

Peggy is survived by her children, Tamara Beaver, John (Lisa) O’Connell, DO, Mike (Melissa) O’Connell and Tom (Susan) O’Connell; Grandchildren, Meleya Beaver, Kate (Craig) Pagano, Pat O’Connell, Megan (Armando) Urias, Jessica O’Connell and Kris O’Connell; Great-granddaughters Cassie and Peyton.  She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Peggy will be laid to rest next to her loving husband of 35 years, Mick.  Her family is comforted in knowing they are finally reunited in heaven and will always be with them in heart and spirit. Final arrangements will take place in Houston, TX.
