John Lappin, "Uncle Jack," was my wife, Janet's uncle. One of the nicest, smartest, and most interesting people I've ever met.
I loved hearing stories about his youth in Washington DC, about the politics, social attitudes and everyday life in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. He was exposed to many important people, and got to know quite a few of them. Fascinating.
I loved his stories about when Washington Redskin players would visit the house. His dad served in some capacity with the team, as "field manager" I was told. Several times, because I am interested in history, he told the story about being at the Redskins-Giants game on the afternoon of December 7th, 1941. The game started at 1 PM, which was 7 AM in Hawaii. Uncle Jack told of hearing General So and So, Admiral So and So, being told to contact their office, and the buzz that went through the crowd with speculation as to what that might be about.
He had a long friendship with Willie Wood, the African-American Hall of Fame defensive back for the Green Bay Packers. Uncle Jack told a story about how he would kid Willie that Wille couldn't cover him - i.e., prevent Uncle Jack from catching a pass. Uncle Jack quoted WIllie as saying that "Yeah, he (Uncle Jack) would juke this way, then that, and his white ass would be GONE!!"
Uncle Jack was a true Renaissance Man. Interested in everything, and knowledgeable about many, many things. Despite his knowledge and intelligence, he was always humble and gracious. One of the best conversationalists I've ever known. If ever there were someone who personifies the term "avuncular," it was him. Someone who was a great listener, wise, understanding, and always with interesting insights.
I loved how he embraced internet technology - something few people in their 80s and 90s do. He was all over that, used it a lot and very effectively. He loved to discuss politics, and did so prolifically through his emails.
The world is a better place because of God's gift of this man, for the time he was with us. I love you Uncle Jack!!
