Obituary of Dorothy M. Haney

Dorothy Haney of Herndon Virginia died on November 27^th, 2020 in her home with her son Allen by her side. When Dorothy was born on January 16, 1923, in Paris, Illinois, her father, Calvin, was 33, and her mother, Beatrice, was 35. Dorothy had a remarkable life with many amazing milestones in her 97 years. Dorothy grew up in the blue-collar farm country of Indiana and went to Churubusco High School where she met and ultimately married her high school sweetheart Joe August 29^th, 1943. Shortly after she gave birth to her only son, Allen, on October 15^th, 1944. While Allen was still an infant, she watched her husband Joe sail off overseas to fight in World War 2. Not exactly the storybook beginning for two newlyweds and new parents. Joe spent over 2 years in the Army World War II, fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany with General Patton’s 94th Division. Dorothy loved her family with all her heart.  There weren’t many people more devoted to one another than Joe and Dorothy.  Joe absolutely adored Dorothy, and she loved him right back for 64 amazing years.  She was and always will be the apple of his eye and Dorothy missed Joe’s presence every day since he passed in 2007.

Dorothy and Joe raised Allen in Fort Wayne Indiana and watched him graduate from North Side High School. His football talents took him to SMU, but then his engineering talents led him to Purdue, but Allen managed to finish up his degree as an adult graduate of University of Maryland University College (UMUC), a graduation ceremony they both were proud to attend. They were thrilled to see Allen marry his wonderful wife Dianne, and before Dianne really knew what she was doing, she managed to “softly invite” them to move out from Indiana to the Washington DC area where she and Allen were living. Dorothy and Joe didn’t mind uprooting their lives one bit (even though there may have been some complaints or belly aching over the years), they were thrilled to be there for the birth of their two grandsons, Brian and Scott. 

Dorothy loved her grandsons!  Grandma made the world’s best chocolate chip cookies and managed to overindulge grandchildren and every time they would visit. She and Joe enjoyed all the time they got, from baking cookies and always letting them eat some of the cookie dough too, to fishing, sports, a never ending supply of ice cream and everything in between, she spoiled her grandkids rotten and they loved every minute of it.  Going to see Grandma and grandpa was always their home away from home and they are both so grateful to have spent so much time with this wonderful woman. She loved her family dearly, prayed for them constantly, and got to share many amazing life events with them, including both her grandsons getting married to two amazing ladies. There are so many sweet Holiday family memories of the smell of a fire and presents under the tree – her presence will surely be missed at Christmas but we rejoice that she is in a better place and back with Joe and her Savior. 

Of all the things Dorothy would have wanted to be remembered for it would be her devotion to God.  Dorothy loved the Lord.  She recognized that there was more to life than just living…she wanted to leave an eternal mark.  Joe and Dorothy valued their church family, the amazing people of Dranesville UMC who routinely visited with her after Joe’s passing and always lifted her spirits and kept her in prayer. Her steadfast church attendance was but a small part of the daily testimony that was Dorothy’s life.  It was faith that got her through the war, it was faith that gave her 64 years of marriage, it was faith that helped her raise an amazing son, it was faith that allowed her to pour out her goodness into the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchild, it was faith that allowed her to bless her friends and loved ones every day, and it is faith that will allow us to see her again one day.

She is survived by her son, Allen (Dianne), her grandson; Brian, (Kelly), granddaughter Jordyn, and her grandson; Scott, (Lawanda) step-granddaughter Alexis, and a new grandchild on the way.

Adams Green will be handling the arrangements and burial will be a private service at Quantico on December 9 at 11:00. The family requests memorial donations to Dranesville UMC in lieu of flowers.
