Obituary of Patricia Lacey Coan

Patricia (Pat) Lacey Coan passed away at her home of 56 years in Falls Church, VA, on Saturday, December 12, 2020. Prior to her death, she was surrounded by children and grandchildren and Keira, her son’s dog for which she had developed a deep affection.

Born in Washington, DC on March 20, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Robert H. Lacey and the late Margaret Lacey. In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her three siblings: Muriel, Robert and Dorothy.

Raised in Washington, DC, Pat attended high school at the Upton Street campus of The Academy of the Holy Cross where she was named as a city-wide all-star basketball player for the District of Columbia. In addition, Pat attended Immaculata Junior College for two years.

On June 25, 1955, after having met on a blind date, Pat married Carl A. S. Coan, Jr. (Carl) to whom she was married until Carl’s death in 2013, or for almost 58 years. Together, they raised five children who blessed them with nine grandchildren.

Pat was a devout Catholic who lived her faith. She was kind, patient, generous, loving and caring. She never had a harsh word for anyone, opting, instead, to always look for the good in people. She opened her heart to many. In turn, many opened their heart to her. She will be greatly missed.

Pat is survived by her five children: Carl (Lynne), Chris, Tim, Sheila (Jim), and Ken (Mary), her eight granddaughters and one grandson.   

The family will receive family and friends, albeit in limited numbers due to state-imposed Covid-related restrictions, from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at Adams Green Funeral Home in Herndon, VA. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 21, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Herndon, VA, with Pat’s nephew, Rev. Greg Coan, officiating. Burial will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Again, though, due to Covid-related restrictions, outside of the immediate family, only a small number of invited guests may attend the funeral mass. The family deeply regrets having to place such a limitation. However, the family intends to plan a celebration of Pat’s life for Pat’s entire family and friends in 2021 as soon as it is safe.
