Shelda ‘Shelly’ Rae Oberg Buckmeier passed away peacefully on Christmas day surrounded by her family. The middle daughter of Howard and Lu Oberg was born in Fargo, North Dakota. She grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota, with her older sister Nancy and younger brother Brad. As a child she was energetic and fun loving, traits she carried with her into adulthood.  She was also intelligent, generous, loyal, tenacious, kind hearted, and a beautiful person inside and out.

Shelly graduated from the University of South Dakota where she met her husband and best friend of 35 years, Tony Buckmeier. The couple moved to Washington, DC in 1987 where she worked as a top advertising sales person for USA Today newspaper. In 1991, when her first daughter Allyson was born, she moved on from her sales job to raise her family. Her second daughter, Lindsey, was born in 1994 on the same day as Allyson’s 3rd birthday and Shelly’s new ‘favorite day ever’.

As her children grew, Shelly found work as a US Government contractor where she thrived until her retirement in early 2020. She loved her new career path but even more so the people she met and worked with.  According to co-workers she excelled at her job and was someone most wanted to work with.  She enjoyed inventing nicknames for her friends and co-workers, a trait passed down to her by her father.

Shelly enjoyed cheering on the Washington Nationals and Capitals but most of all Penn State athletics. She loved attending Penn State football games with her family and was extremely proud of her daughters when they graduated from Penn State.

She had a zest for life and loved traveling the world with her friends and family. She also loved attending concerts, laughing to comedians, and singing along with U2, Jimmy Buffet, Alan Jackson, and many others.  She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend to many, all of whom admired her larger than life personality and kind spirit. She was always thinking of others, even in her final days as she was coordinating food bank donations for the less fortunate and ensuring Christmas gifts were bought for others.

Shelly was adored and loved by so many people who will remember and miss her forever.  Many of the cards and letters of sympathy the family has received resonated a similar theme that Shelly was the personification of goodness and love and that we were lucky to have had her in our lives.  We were blessed with her love, friendship, and laughter.

The memorial service will be held on January 4, 2020 at 11AM virtually due to COVID restrictions. The link to the service can be found by following the link on this page. The recording will be available for 90 days following the ceremony if you are unable to make it at the designated time.
