Rusty,
Words cannot describe the sorrow I felt on finding out about Jim's passing. He was a gentle and kind spirited man with a big heart. I was looking forward to coming over and watching the WTF game with you and Jim on your new big screen TV, and then COVID-19 hit - Now we have Jim watching over us! He will be sorely missed and never forgotten. Hope you find strength and love in friends and family to face the though days ahead.
My prayers are with you.

“Ordinary”happenings can lead to lasting memories with good friends. That’s how it has been with our family and Jim and Thirza. Finding the perfect cut-your-own Christmas tree. Bountiful breakfasts at the Shilketts. Beach trips. The best homemade Christmas cookies, by the dozens. Touring the D.C. monuments, with Shilketts as our guides.
Thanks for all that and more, Jim and Thirza! I love you both. John

I cannot remember a time when Jim and Thirza weren't a huge, very special part of my life. I feel so thankful to continue to enjoy their love and friendship after 40 years.
Jim was a man's man. He was tough but kind. He was thoughtful and serious, but had a laugh that made everyone smile. He was a military man who drove beautiful fast cars, but he was never shy about giving a big hug and telling you he loved you.
I remember when Philip passed and our family came to the funeral, I was wearing a tie, maybe for the first time in my life. When Jim saw me walk in the room, he came up to me, untied the tie and stuffed it in my pocket. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said "There, that's better. That is how Phillip would want to see his friend." I never forgot that moment, not just because I was relieved to get rid of the formal attire, but because Jim was right. He didn't care about the formality of the moment. He wanted all of the hundreds of friends and loved ones in attendance to be comfortable and happy in remembrance of a wonderful life.
As for Thirza, who I know is hurting deeply right now, our family will be visiting early and often. You may need to stock up on goldfish crackers and coloring books, because the Stone clan is coming in the minivan! I hope you will join us for many more backyard sit-downs and swing sessions.
When I hit difficult or delicate times in my life, you always sat down with me to find out what happened. And there was never any reason to be anything but honest with you because you always let me know that I was loved. I love you and appreciate you more than you know.
I will miss Jim, his hugs, his belly-laughs, and his genuine smile. Thankfully for me and my family, we won't have to miss all of the love the Shilketts have to give.

It is a sad event that our friendship was so brief. We miss your radiant smile and sweet personality. Your life was so accomplished with years of service given to the military and the love and kindnesses you gave to others. Your memory will live in the hearts of those you touched. Rest In Peace.

Dear Rusty,
Our time here is so very short. Liz and John have always told me when you both spoke with them as well as shared time together.
Your love for each other and your special family just glowed as a pathway to happiness, devotion and kindness.
I will never forget the time you spent with me as I waited in the hospital, in Alexandria VA., during Arnie's lengthy and compilcated oseopathic surgery, so far away from our home in Salem VA. A comfort in a big strange hospital.
I too have lost Arnie to another life without pain and surrounded by our Lords love. We had a beautiful life together, and I know your time together was so very precious.
Sending you and your family much love, Rosanne Moon

Jim was such a special man and friend to our family. Jim and Rusty came to the airport to welcome our daughter Lauren home from South Korea as a baby when she came to our family in 1993. Jim wanted Lauren to ride home from National airport "In Style" in his brand new Lexus, and so Rusty and Jim came to airport with us to meet Lauren for the first time. Since that day, Rusty and Jim have been a part of our family and our lives. Jim was the kindest person I've ever met. I loved his smile and his hugs and the way he would listen and laugh. I have so many amazing memories of Jim playing with our kids and and loving us all so unconditionally. We miss him terribly. We love you Rusty and hold you in our hearts and prayers.
With love, Liz Lusk

One of my favorite memory of Jim was how he was always ready for any type of adventure. We took many vacations with Jim and Rusty and he was up for whatever the group wanted to do. He was always one of the first one's ready wearing his signature hat. He loved playing with our kids in the pool and always had kind words for everyone. I miss him deeply. He was a gentle soul.

Rusty,
You have been on my mind. I am so sorry for your devastating loss. Jim was a phenomenal husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was the ultimate gentleman. I feel honored to have known him and loved him. He was always so kind, patient with the kiddos, engaged you during conversation, like you were the only one in the room and he loved BIG, especially his love for you. I always enjoyed being around you two and watching the easiness and respect that you had for one another.
I loved how you guys planned events to keep the families bonded. Whether it was family pool party/slip-n-slide sleepovers, the annual car show or the Ice Display adventures, you guys always made sure to show your love for family and make everyone feel so special. It was particularly heart warming to see Jim's face light up when one of his grandkids walked into a room. He was an amazing human.
I know you are hurting, but I hope the lifetime of memories that you two shared bring a little light and peace during this difficult time.
With love,
Traci Infante

Rusty, I was particularly sadden to learn of Jim's passing. Jim and his friend/colleague Carrol Day were my first MMS procurement mentors. Jim had the unusual talent of transitional gab, in that he could greet you, talk about work, drop into a personal adventure, and finish the work topic all in the span of 5 minutes; he amazed me with his vivid insights and I'm a grateful and better person for knowing Jim. Your and Jim's 2007 corvette road trip across the US on Classic US Route 66 was an absolute pleasure to follow. I'm very sorry for your loss and pray peace returns to your heart light as a feather.

Rusty - Jim was my first boss in federal government when I started as an intern at age 19 with Minerals Management Service. He taught me many invaluable personal and professional life lessons that I carry with me to this day. He was my favorite person to work for and remains steadfastly one of the kindest people I've ever known. My husband and I are grieving with you from the West Coast at this time, and I'm so sorry that we won't be able to make the memorial service. Our hearts are with you during this difficult time- but I just wanted to pass along that Jim was such a special person to me and helped shape the person that I am today. Thinking of you, Ashley Adair (Apollony)
