We just learned of Gary's passing and want to add our condolences to the Rinker family. When we attended Chantilly Bible Church, Gary was one of the first smiling faces to greet us every Sunday when we walked through the doors. I know he will be missed by all who knew him.

To the family,
Gary was a unique individual who always had interesting stories to tell. The last time I saw him was at the funeral service for Diane Jenkins. He regaled us with stories about Diane, the fun he had playing Captain Herndon, and memories of times spent at Herndon High School. He promised he would attend the next HHS Alumni picnic which was postponed because of the pandemic. I had hoped to see him at the picnic this summer. He will be remembered as we name those graduates who have passed since the last picnic. May your faith and your memories bring you comfort as you grieve this loss.

Gary was a dedicated background supporter and member of the Brethren in Harmony barbershop gospel group. Music conductor Bill Holsinger could always depend on him. He helped BIH to minister to many by spreading God's Word through gospel music. All Brethren in Harmony members cherish his memory.
Gary was always a smiling friendly greeter to all visitors at Chantilly Bible Church and at BIH performances. He took an interest in each acquaintance, whether it was a first time or repeat meeting. Whenever we met, he treated me and my family as his close friends. We were blessed to know him. Through his volunteer activities, he definitely was a close friend of the Town of Herndon.

Gary, or 'Commander' as those of us who called him a true friend referred to him, was a true friend to the Town of Herndon. Not only did he portray Commander William Lewis Herndon in full, dress uniform of the Commander's day; but he also pitched in and played the part of Train Conductor for Caboose tours, and even Santa to the delight of the Town children during the annual Homecoming Parades. He was also a tour guide for some of the popular Holiday Homes Tours of Herndon. He loved retelling the story of Commander Herndon and his bravery during the sinking of his ship the Central America to area school children when they visited the Depot Museum on field trips.
Gary will definitely be missed. He was always ready to help, in any way that he could. He was an extremely dependable, regular volunteer for the JamBrew concerts on the Town Green where he took pride in helping to load in, set up, guard the back gate, and pack out for each and every concert.
Thank you, Gary, for your service to the Town, your friendship, and your willingness to always help wherever, whenever, and however you could. You will NOT be forgotten.

Jack, Pat, Kathy, and Kenny,
I was saddened to learn of Gary’s passing and will always have fond memories of him. We grew up together, as next door neighbors, on Sterling Rd. I was a little older than Gary, but he was like my second little brother, as my brother Gary was about the same age, as he. The three of us spent a lot of time playing in some big football games in our back yard. I send my love and sincere condolences to each of you, as you deal with your loss.

Gary was a friend who always was a great help to me and not bashful when I did things to which he didn't agree. . His dedication to Herrndon was unsupassed and he was its biggest promotor. He was every body's friend and his impersonation of Commander Herndon was priceless. He will be missed by all and leavers a void in the Herndon community.

Rinker family, know that you are in my thoughts and prayers! I grew up with Gary, right here on Sterling Rd. Rode the bus with him to school. Then worked with him at the Town of Herndon. Gary was an all around super guy!! Hard working and had a heart of gold.
He will be missed by so very many people that he touched over his life time!
Gary aka "Puddin", go rest on high my friend, Your work on earth is done! I look forward to seeing you again someday!! Save me a cup of pudding ;)
