This is extremely difficult as I have only learned of the death of Scott today. I wanted to reach out to him and reconnect since returning to Atlanta and getting thru the Pandemic. I worked with Scott at the CDC, the Division of the Strategic National Stockpile (DSNS). We were very close, spent time together on and off the clock, we at lunch together every day and we even went to six flags together. He was there when I needed him and he always had a great smile and joke for you. Needless to say, I was very sad when he initially left the CDC but excited that he was working toward his professional goals. I was so happy when he returned to the CDC a short time later. Scott was a great friend and person who spoke highly of his parents. I am truly heartbroken. However, I am the lucky one. I was truly BLESSED to have known him

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Scott's passing. He was a dear friend for over 20 years. We had many fun trips and adventures together, I will miss him terribly!

I'll really miss seeing Scott smiling outside and hearing an insightful or funny comment from him. I learned a lot from Scott on how to communicate complex information and I will dearly miss him.

Scott was one of my very first supervisors and a very important teacher in the early part of my career. He taught me to dig deep, know my self-worth, and to not miss that darn forest for all of those trees (I'm admittedly still learning).
Truly, I admired the way he could command a room and, somehow, pinpoint the one thing that no one thought of despite 100 conversations. You can't teach that—you either have it, or you don't – and Scott had it.
But work is just what we do, it's not who we are. I also like to think about the guy who exuded razor sharp wit and sarcasm, laughed heartily, and forever had Taco Bell hot sauce packets scattered across his desk. I'm so sorry I never told him any of this. One thing is for sure: he had a profound impact on many, including me. May love and light be with him, his family, and friends today, tomorrow, and always.

My work with CDC predated Scott's, so we both started out as relative kids (him more than me) and grew together. We had projects together off and on for his entire CDC career, and he could always be counted on for excellent work and a good attitude to get through deadline-driven stress. He will be greatly missed, but always appreciated.

My heart goes out to Scott’s family, friends, and CDC colleagues at this time of grief. I was surprised and saddened to hear about his passing. He was a good guy with a big smile and sense of humor. I am going to miss his input and advise as we plan and prepare for major releases. I will also miss seeing him in walks along the Corporate Square quad to break up our workday. My sincere condolences during this difficult time.

Scott was a caring, funny, and supportive friend and colleague. I frequently found him in the unenviable position of training me in media communications on issues, like syphilis, pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention, behavioral surveillance among adolescents, and other controversial, but important issues in public health. He openly and thoughtfully corrected my errors, investigated questions, and protected me from aggressive journalists. He cared deeply about the issues of our Center at CDC. And, he brought to my days and those of many others, a sardonic charm that was uniquely his own. I will miss him greatly.

Scott was a very dear and special colleague. I met him in 2007 and worked with him on several media interviews over the last 14 years. We spent many hours in my office talking about events of the day, our love of family and the joys of being with friends. I looked forward to our conversations and always knew that I would be blessed by the discussion and his presence. I can still see his smiling face, peeping through my slightly open office door while saying, "I'm here, you ready?"
Scott, I'm here and not ready for you not to be here with us! I will always miss you, but am eternally grateful for our times today.
Rest well! Thank you for being you.

I, like many others who have left messages, first met Scott as I interviewed for a position on his team. After the interview, I was returning to bring in a handwritten thank you note and ran into him on his way out to lunch. We shared our first of many laughs together on that day.
Scott would come by my office (or vice versa) with a random line from a song or movie and we’d quiz each other. “Sing it, Scott,” I’d ask. Scott would smile and say, “Now, Donni, you know you don’t want me howling in the halls.” And he’d step away in his Timberland boots, only to yell the title of the random Vanity 6 song, or Jenifer Lewis movie back at me moments later. I appreciated his commitment to the important work he was doing, but that we could laugh and find moments of joy in the day.
It was clear to me how much he loved his family. We always shared stories of our families, but especially our mothers. We both shared close relationships with these amazing women in our lives and looked up to them. Our long running joke was that we both thought our mothers would check-in with our dogs directly if they could and bypass having to make small talk with us.
Scott pushed the entire team to be better, but always made sure we prioritized our family and personal lives. If he knew I was traveling home to South Carolina, he’d check in to make sure I made it through the seemingly endless interstate construction he experienced on his own trips to Myrtle Beach.
I will miss Scott tremendously.
To his family: There are no words for such an unimaginable loss, but I am praying for all of you. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Scott hired me fresh out of graduate school, jump-starting my career in Public Health. Despite my lack of experience, he saw potential in me and reminded me of that often when I needed encouragement. He was a wonderful boss with a great sense of humor. I wouldn't be where I am professionally without his support and guidance. I am so saddened by this enormous loss and like so many of his CDC colleagues will miss Scott and remember him fondly.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Bryan family and for all of Scott's friends. There just are not enough or current words to use to say everything and how we all felt about Scott; a great man, kind, polite, patient, dedicated, intelligent, funny, cooperative. He was such a good person and he is gone much too soon. Scott will be missed and his passing diminishes the light of the world.

The first meeting I attended when I joined the Health Communication Science Office in 2019, Scott presented about new messaging around Latent TB Infections (LTBI). I took SO many notes because everything he said made LTBIs sound like the most important thing in the new work I was learning. He set the tone for me: when we communicate, it better sound important! When I stepped into a leadership role last year, Scott and I would meet weekly and he always set me at ease. He was so loyal and supportive to his team. I admired him. The loss of Scott in our daily lives is a shock to the system. To say he is missed is an understatement. I think of his family and cannot fathom their sense of loss. My deepest condolences to you all and hope that you find comfort in each other and your memories through this difficult time.

My thoughts go to Scott's family during this time of loss. As a part of his CDC family, I know that he was bright, dedicated, intelligent, and warm. I got to meet Scott when I started in my new position on the team, and our offices were right next to each other. As a new team lead, he was always there to help me find my way. And, I will always be grateful to have had to honor to meet him and work with him. This is an enormous loss, and we will miss him immensely.

Scott and I started working at CDC on the same day, and we had offices side by side on the same team for several years. He was an excellent colleague— a total team player who always wanted to get the job done well. He treated everyone with respect while always lightening the heavy load of our work with his quick wit and wry sense of humor. I have so many memories of his one-liners that make me smile! What a presence he had. It was an honor to know him, and I am so terribly sorry he left us far too soon. To his family — thank you for sharing him with us, and I am praying for all of you.

Scott's passing has left a tremendous hole in many lives. I too have Scott to thank for my career at CDC. We always said he was great at hiring - he saw things in people they sometimes didn't even see in themselves. He was a good human. He encouraged me to take care of myself and my family, and to never let the work get in the way of that. When I became a mom and was trying to figure out how to juggle work and all the new mom things, he went out of his way to support me and make me feel like I was still just as smart and capable as before. He was honest and funny. He told great stories and he had a great laugh. And he loved his family so much. I'm sorry for our collective loss, but I am so fortunate to have known him.

The first time I met Scott, I was at CDC to interview for a position on his team. He greeted me in a snazzy shirt and a bright blue blazer. I knew quickly - without hesitation - that I wanted to work not just at CDC, but for him. And I did. Scott took a chance, and hired me to join his team. His decision changed the trajectory of my life in many ways -- and I am forever grateful. He kept me on my toes, and we shared many, many laughs. I will always remember his appreciation for 90s anthems, Timberland boots, and crisp writing. I will miss Scott tremendously. He was loved.
