SERVICE -DEATH NOTICE

(Age 83)

Of Great Falls, VA.  Beloved husband of Katharine and loving father of Clare passed away peacefully on April 19, 2021 at Reston Hospital Center with his family by his side. 

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 20, 2021, at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas a Becket Catholic Church, 1421 Wiehle Avenue, Reston, VA 20190.  The family will visit with relatives and friends at the Church from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass.  All current state and local COVID-19 guidelines will be observed.

OBITUARY

 

Edward Heberg, 83, of Great Falls, VA.  Beloved husband of Katharine and loving father of Clare passed away on April 19, 2021 at Reston Hospital Center with his family by his side.  He grew up in Chicago and received a BS degree in Political Science and an MA in History.  He and his first wife moved to Maryland where they raised their daughter.  After his wife's death, Ed married Kathy and they later moved to Great Falls.  They were married for nearly 41 years.

Ed was a proud and dedicated Federal Government civil servant with a career spanning 30 years.  He was recognized for his achievements and was well-respected and liked by colleagues and superiors.  After Ed retired, he and Kathy focused on enjoying their retirement together.  They traveled in the US and overseas, and for a time spent the winter months in southern Florida.  Ed believed in service and was a supporter of community organizations and events.  Over the years he shared his time and talents with many volunteer groups in both Virginia and Florida and was an active member of his church.  A punster and regular solver of crossword puzzles, Ed was always delighted to regale friends and family with a new joke or a new word.  He was a long-time member of his neighborhood poker group and an avid bridge player spending many happy hours enjoying the game with his friends.  He truly enjoyed sports - especially Cubs baseball (never missed a game on TV), softball, bowling, basketball, and being a JV basketball referee until the players got too fast for him.  He was an avid reader, especially of history and science fiction, usually while listening to classical music.

Ed was preceded in death by his first wife, parents, and brother.  In addition to Katharine and Clare, Ed is survived by his nephew, niece, sister-in-law, cousins, and many other relatives and friends.

Ed was a lifelong Cubs fan. Like Cubs fans everywhere, he was thrilled and amazed when the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, ending a 108-year run without a World Series championship.
