Obituary of Frank Alan Yeager

Frank A. Yeager, career civil servant at US Dept. of Labor, passed away on May 15, 2021, at 91.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Arlene; his children Marcia Kinter (William); Robert Yeager (Uta Kogelsberger); Lynn Yeager (John Coons); grandchildren Christopher Kinter (Jenna); Melissa Kinter (Kyle Porpotage) and great granddaughters Kayleigh and Ava Jane Kinter.
Educated in Political Science at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University in Detroit, he moved to Washington, DC in 1955 where he met and married Arlene Stearns, with whom he would raise his family. During his 32 year career at DOL he was part of the team that created the Senior Executive Service with the goal of retaining top quality talent in the civil service. He oversaw the creation of the DOL Audit and Investigations division and retired in 1986 as Director of Personnel. Subsequently, he worked with the National Academy of Public Administration for ten years, notably advising the US Bureau of Prisons and the People’s Republic of China in restructuring their civil service programs.
In November of 1990, he and Arlene retired to live in New Bern, NC where they pursued their love of golf and tennis. Frank was an Elder at First Presbyterian Church, a Docent at New Bern Firemen’s Museum, a Docent at Tryon Palace and a member of a Fairfield Harbour daily coffee group where many matters of world importance were discussed.
He was a lifelong supporter of the University of Michigan and in retirement generously supported First Presbyterian Church, New Bern Firemen’s Museum, other local organizations, as well as a variety of causes important to his children.
A memorial service will be held at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, VA on August 4, 2021, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the New Bern Firemen’s Museum by writing IMO Frank Yeager in the memo section of the check and sending it to 420 Broad Street, New Bern, NC 28560.
