I met Hal back in the 90s with our activities with the College of Engineering & Science Advisory Council at the Univ of Detroit Mercy, and I enjoyed our conversations related to Defense Industry Technologies. Hal was one of many Great Buffalo Catholics that came to Detroit for College.
May Harold Bertrand Jr be Resting-in-Peace.
Mark Mikula.

Dear Barb,
We are so saddened to hear of Hal’s passing. Such a loss! We know you will miss him.
But, what a blessing you had with him. How very fortunate that you shared so many wonderful years with Hal, and that Andrea, John, and Mike had always had him as part of their lives. Our deepest sympathies to you and all your family.
I remember when we first met Hal in the spring of 1980 as we were moving into the neighborhood. He came up the driveway to introduce himself with a smile and an offer to help. He had a warmth that as we would learn, he shared with everyone.
His big heart was known throughout our neighborhood, of which he was an integral part. On the Eagon Hills Board for many years, he was a trusted resource for many. Whether helping a neighbor build a garage or sharing his tools and engineering advice, if he saw a way to help, Hal would be there.
He was a great listener, showing interest, kindness and a consistently bright and positive attitude. Once when Julianne was mowing lawns in the neighborhood, the tractor stalled and he was nearby. He approached offering advice and encouragement and sincere praise when she found the fix. When she later told him that she was studying international relations in college, he hired her at the Department of Defense for a summer job. It was a great launching point for her career working for the public good as he did. He would find ways to encourage people in whatever they chose to do.
When we started to build a camper from a cargo van, he would come over to check on our progress, sent us interesting articles, and introduced us to his friend, Lance, who was working on a similar project. He always went beyond the passive interest of any neighbor, and took action that reflected a true personal interest in his friends.
The faith and courage he showed when challenged with a stroke was emblematic of his hopeful outlook on life. We had a connection in joking about the patience required in recovering from a brain injury. He could smile at life.
Hal was a touchstone, who would make the effort to keep connections. We are grateful that we had a chance after the pandemic to go back to Café Tatti a few weeks ago with you and Hal. We caught up on Andrea’s work at the monastery and successful catering business. He was so proud of his granddaughter’s artistic skills and his grandson in high school. He told us about the great work Mike and his wife did on their new home, and how he was looking forward to visiting and helping them with some electrical wiring. We talked about John’s home in California and the videos he had forwarded to us during the wildfires of the mountain lion in John’s yard. His family was at the center of his heart and he was so very proud of all of you.
He was strong and calm, and provided a steady base not only for you but also for our community. He would listen and respond with compassion kindness and an offer to help. Hal - a generous, genuine, and kind person.
We are saddened by his passing. He will be remembered fondly and missed by all who knew him. He was a remarkable friend and neighbor. With all our sympathy, we wish you peace with your good memories. May the love he gave all of you and your memories of him give you comfort now and keep him close in your hearts forever.
