Obituary of Lee Joseph Goncalves
Lee Goncalves, 36 of Herndon, VA, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2021 in his home.
Born on January 6, 1985 in Greenville, NC he was the son of Randy and Carol Goncalves and the brother of Jennifer Goncalves. He is also survived by 2 children Bradley Goncalves of Staunton VA and Alexis Goncalves of Manassas VA
Lee held an Associate of Science Degree from Northern Virginia Community College and followed with a Certificate for Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Counselor at Northern Virginia Community College.
Lee continued his education at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia where he consistently made the Dean’s List and was one semester from receiving his Bachelor’s Degree. Upon learning of Lee’s passing, his Dean at GMU commented: “Lee was a committed and successful student. Most of all, he was a role model to students of multiple generations.”
This past spring, Lee interned for the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) helpline to assist people struggling with substance abuse and mental illness. After the internship, Lee continued his work with NAMI until his passing. NAMI asked him to continue his volunteer work with them during the autumn and he was looking forward to continuing to help others. When informed of Lee’s passing, the manager of NAMI helpline operations commented: “Lee was such a wonderful presence at the HelpLine. He cared so much and helped so many. We'll miss him dearly.”
