I just learned of Barbara's death today and wanted to express my condolences to her family. She and I worked in the same suite of offices at AU and had many long conversations about books and family and Brooklyn and the state of the world. She brought so much joy without sugar-coating a thing! I always made a point to get my Girl Scouts cookies from her granddaughter (there was a lot of competition in that office) because I was such a fan of Barbara. I think of her often and though it's sad to know that I won't be bumping into her again on this earth my fond memories of her live on.

I was one of Barbara’s caregivers and really don’t know what to say, but must say l was shocked to arrive at Barbara’s home that sad morning when l read a message from the office that Barbara had passed. I sat still in my car without words, confused and couldn’t drive off. Fortunately, her older daughter Tammy came by and we hugged and cried on each other’s shoulders. Barbara may be gone from my sight but she is never gone from my heart. My experience though brief was worthwhile with Barbara. We shared memories about her
careers, vacations and trips to Africa/ other countries. We indeed had some good humor during my shift with her. Barbara was such a wonderful person - selfless , full of positivity and kindness. She will be hugely missed. My deepest sympathies to her children, grandchildren, friends and family.

Predictably, Barbara and I met while walking our dogs in our Potomac Green community. We all four became good friends. We generally met spontaneously, and would take Fidel and Baby Jazz on short walks. She considered my long walks to be "Enforced Marches" but then always agreed to come with us. On one of our Enforced Marches, we ended up at One Loudoun, saw the sign for happy hour oysters and decided to stop in. It was an easy decision. She had a martini with hers, but was very circumspect when giving the waiter her order, it had to be made a certain way and nothing else would do. We enjoyed talking, eating and drinking so much, we ordered a second round of drinks and oysters.Such a fun memory. I loved Barbara's smile and having conversations with her, she was so very intelligent. I miss my friend very much.

Jim and I extend our heartfelt condolences to Barbara's family.
I miss my Saturday morning walking partner terribly. Together we solved many of the world's problems over avocado toast and skinny lattes at Barnes & Noble, stopping along our walk to/from for Barbara to pet every puppy we met along the way.
She was humanitarian-in-chief, wanting equity and compassion for all mankind. But there is NO greater love than that which she had for her precious jewels, Tammy and Heather, and for her grandchildren.
Barbara would not want any of us to waste a minute not living life to the fullest. In her honor, let's do something everyday to live life the "Barbara" way!

Dearest cousin Barbara,
You have been more than a cousin to me in so many ways. You give me counsel and the occasional "oh Ari" when I needed it, I will miss our English muffin and chicken sausage breakfasts and how at home you made me feel when I was in Ashburn. I can't make sense of why someone so full of life has left so suddenly but I know that you have been and will always be a blessing to so many. Honored and humbled that I made it back to see you one last time. I am comforted by the thought that all our ancestors were there to greet you as you transitioned. Rest well and in peace dear Barbara you are forever loved.
Ari

I will miss Barbara as will Abby (pup). We enjoyed being neighbors on the second floor and letting our pups misbehave in the hallway! RIP my friend.
