Mr. D was on my heart this week. To find this site was very sad for me. I am sorry for your loss.
Mr. D was my art teacher at Herndon High School. I recall in one pencil drawing every time I felt it was finished and I would take it up to him he would always have something bad to say (thought process of a teenager). My classmates were always saying how they wish they can do art like I did. After class was over that day, he asked me to stay back a minute. He asked me, "Do you know why I point out the things you need to fix?" Of course almost in tears and also in a little frustration, I just relied, "No." He said, "If I just compliment on what you do right, how will you ever improve? I think you have a real gift and when you are getting ready for college, I want to help you prepare your portfolio." Then he handed me one of his used portfolios.
Although my parents did not allow me to major in fine arts in college. I still do fine arts. And I still have the portfolio he gave me. I treasure that thing because among the adults, he believed in me.
In everything I do, what he said to me that day is still deeply embedded in my heart. I apply those words to my life in everything I do.
I will see you later Mr. D.

I am so sorry for your family’s loss. Mr D was my art teacher at Herndon. He was generously gracious with his time, and sincerely kind. Mr D helped me put my art portfolio together so that I could apply to the Corcoran School for The Arts. I got accepted, on a scholarship no less! Of all the wonderful statements Mr D would randomly state, one anecdote has stayed with me since 1987. During a conversation with the class one day, he stated while smiling, “the time I feel closest to death is when I sneeze while driving”. I think of him EVERY TIME I sneeze while driving.

Mr. D was my art teacher way back in 1970. Through the years we reconnected at St. Joseph's, class reunions and town functions. He shared his devotion of Padre Pio & his love of our Lord.
Mr. D will be sorely missed & always remembered with a warm heart & smiles. My condolences to the family he loved and cherished. Leslie Croson

I knew Mr. D for about 50 years. In the 1970's, he was one of the 'cool' teachers in high school who found art potential in every student, even when it was a struggle to do so! He was a loving parent who paid generous wages to babysitters like me (I'll never forget most of one evening spent pacing the floor with a squalling Jenny in my arms!). He was a firebrand neighbor forever championing a new cause. He was a familiar figure at Mass, always stopping for a chat after greeting you like a long-lost relative. He could bend anyone's ear on almost any subject!
I think we see only a few facets of most people, but Mr. D was a complex tapestry of 'selves' that he eagerly shared and that each made the world a better place. Rest in peace, say 'Hi' to my parents, and give the angels a chance to talk back!!!!
With condolences to all of the family,
Patricia (Patty) Pickett

I met Tony later in the 80s when I became a parishioner at St Joe’s. Always a smiling face, always devoted to church and family! I am grateful to have crossed paths with him and his family. I am italian born and we always shared something about italian food or culture. When I became a French Immersion teacher my students recited original poems in French at a ceremony for Herndon’s Mayor De Benedittis. Tony complimented my students. Always a kind word!

We are with you all...Virginia Family.
We very much enjoyed Mr D's smile and excitement every time he told his stories, how he always wanted to know how we were doing...checking in to make sure we were happy...and how he loved to share something of himself (or that he collected) with others!
His giving nature, in itself, was his greatest trait and what will be most remembered by us.
Here's just a couple of gifts of himself that he gave to us which we will always cherish...will always act as a reminder...and most importantly, will always bring a smile to our faces in remembrance of Mr D.
We are hugging all of you and praying for understanding, especially for all the grandchildren.
We will miss him but, we know we will see him again!
We love all of you,
Keith & Sonia Albers, Chase & Brandon

My deepest condolences to Mrs. D, Julie, Stephen, Jenny & Tim, their spouses and children and the rest of the family. Mr. D was a beloved art teacher of mine, a friend of the family and especially of my Mom. He was a friend and comfort to my Mom, sharing their faith. I went into the field of graphic design because of his influences and encouragement. May his soul enjoy his eternal rest with our savior and Lord Jesus.

Mr. D was my art teacher at Herndon High - such a great influence on me and so supportive of me as an artist. I went into film not fine arts but his encouragement helped steer to making art my life. I regret not reaching out after high school to tell him so.

Tony was a true Herndon icon. I am honored to have been included in his circle of friends. His contributions to our community and his support of our History and Heritage will be remembered and treasured for generations to come. I am especially grateful for the Herndon Holiday Homes Tour booklet cover he designed featuring a 'candle in the window.' Your light will continue to shine, Tony, and we thank you!

Tony will be greatly missed in Herndon. He always had a smile on his face. I always enjoyed seeing Tony drive around Town in his car with his stuffed dog perched on the top. A true trademark for Tony. He touched a countless number of people in Herndon. His contributions to Herndon are all over Town. We send our sincere sympathies to his Family.
