I first met John Benda in Quang Tri Province in South Vietnam in late 1968. We both served there in the Ninth Marines in 1968 and 1969, and we both enjoyed a Mediterranean cruise, courtesy of the the USN, in 1969-1970. We have been good friends for over five decades. Most recently we enjoyed roughly annual get togethers at John's house in Sterling with several other ex-Marine officers, always graciously hosted by Dee.
John was spectacularly honest, loyal to his friends, funny with a sometimes sardonic wit, well read, a keen observer of the human condition, and occasionally somewhat opinionated. John was the best of the best, and we all are much poorer for his passing. I miss him. My condolences to John's family and friends. Semper Fi and Rest in Peace, shipmate.

John’s family and friends, you have my sympathy for the loss of John, who occupied the seat in front of me (alphabetical ordering) throughout our senior year in class 4A. It was from this perch that he tortured faculty with his quick wit (one vivid memory: Ettlinger: “Where did Aeneas put the sacred fire?” John: “In his pocket.” Ettlinger: “Yes.” “No, no.”). John was kind, smart and charming and he remains one of my finest memories from the Prep. I last saw him in 1970 or 1971 when he returned from Vietnam and we had dinner together. I hoped that he would appear at our 50th reunion which he did not attend. We were blessed to have known him.

John was very smart,an exceptional athlete, and one of the nicest persons I ever met. Always with a smile, he was liked and respected by all his classmates. When we talked about golf at our 40th class reunion,it was clear to me that he played at a level far beyond anything I could aspire to. I hope that the many fond memories help alleviate the sorrow caused by his passing.

I am truly sorry for your loss. John was a great friend and companion at the Prep. We shared the adventures of Frodo and Bilbo in our favorite readings, played baseball and basketball together. He was always there when I needed him. So let me say goodbye to him using the nickname he gave me that is still used today. Semperfi from Skeeter

About 15 years ago I had the "pleasure" to travel with Benda to play the Open Championship Rota in Scotland. About 5 days into a trip where we played a lot of golf and people were a little tired, I was paired with Benda at St. Andrews, the Home of Golf. Before the round began, John learned that St. Andrews did not have enough caddies and that he would have to either carry his bag or put it on a trolley. As the round progressed, Benda's game was not getting any better. Mumblin' and Grumblin'. We step to the 14th hole, the home of Hell's Bunker on this storied par 5 and Benda turns to my caddie and asks, "where the hell do I aim this?" The caddie replied at that steeple lying in a bouquet of steeples along the horizon. Benda does not hit a good shot and as we were walking off of the tee he says: "IF THIS GODDAMN GOLF COURSE WAS IN TOLEDO, NO ONE WOULD PLAY IT!!". It will forever be a classic as long as I am around and telling golf stories. Thanks for the many memories Benda. You will always have a spot in my foursome. Godspeed, Swelbar

John and I went to grammar school and high school together. Played CYO b’ball, then were baseball teammates at the Prep, I lost track of him after college. But never forgot what a bright, athletic guy he was. Sure wish the obituary had more info. RIP, John.
