I used to play volleyball with Paul and Rita at Wakefield Park in Virginia. I also served in Vietnam with the Army 101st Airborne Division. I was there in 1966-1968.

Paul was a good and true friend and we treasure our long friendship with both him and Rita. Besides opening up their Potomac Falls guestroom to us on numerous occasions, they were great traveling companions on several driving trips around England. We are grateful to Paul for his diligence in planning the trips and introducing us to, and guiding us through, the ins and outs of military stand-by travel. After a long day trekking through quaint English villages, historic sites and museums, often in chilly, rainy, spring weather, we could count on Paul to find the best pubs with a warm fire and fine English ale for a relaxing and enjoyable end to each day.
Leslie's friendship goes back to PWP volleyball days with memories of the after game stop for a late night snack. We both fondly remember attending New Year's Eve formal dances with them in Fairfax City, giving Paul and Dave an opportunity to once again wear their dress uniforms. We recall them visiting us at Anna Maria Island during the winter and walking down the beach as the wind whipped the sand in drifts, not unlike snow, and how we took refuge at a beach restaurant for a welcome warm lunch.
We will miss Paul's boyish grin, we will miss the way he enjoyed sharing special Scotch whiskeys, we will miss his loyalty to friends, we will miss his great enthusiasm for life and too many things to list or even recall. We will miss our dear friend, greatly!

Another brother is gone. Served with Paul in the 11th Air Assault and 1st Air Cav. Wonderful man. It will be my honor to attend his funeral in January. He was a great supporter of keeping the B/229 gang together each November over for many years. He will be missed. God bless - RIP my brother.

My sincere condolences to Rita and family on your loss. Paul was always proud of his place in "the long Gray line", and wthout question, eill take his place in that line through his own legacy documented in his writings on helicopter warfare now pending publication. Rest in peace my friend.

Paul was one of the first people I met when I started to play volleyball with Parents Without Partners in 1989. He and I shared a common conclusion that essentially none of our compatriots had a clue about how to play volleyball properly and that we should do something to fix that. He was a man of action and arranged with a GMU women’s assistant volleyball coach to run a series of volleyball clinics for our group. Those clinics led to better play (for most people), some new friendships, and my long-running involvement with the GMU volleyball programs. I lost track of Paul and Rita when I left PWP, but remember him fondly and wished we’d been able to stay in contact. My condolences to the family on Paul’s passing.

Though Paul was graduating from West Point when I was barely out of diapers, we both played “Seniors” volleyball together for several years at Montgomery County, MD East County Rec Center. As one who’s knees and back constantly reminds me of my 67 years of antiquity, I always marveled at Paul’s discipline, ability, and will power to continue playing and competing. Not only was he a war hero, but he was a role model for perseverance.
May his spirit live on in all those whose lives he touched.

The best "big brother" adored by my mom, always hospitable, exceedingly generous, willing to share his knowledge and experience, and worthy of respect. I was honored to help with his book and miss his exuberance when relating stories to us at holiday meals, and his passion for history, whiskey, travel, and volleyball. He left his stamp on the world and an enduring impression on his family. Thank you for your time. Rest in peace, Uncle Paul.

Paul was a great warrior and a great scholar. His work on the "re-look" boards provided well-deserved recognition to many Army Aviators. I hope that his book will be published and carry his memory on to those who follow us.

Veterans of the Pleiku Campaign and specifically the 229th lost one of their foremost advocates this week. Col. Paul Winkel has passed away. His wife, Rita, asked that I put the word out. Paul will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery at a yet undetermined time. No other services are planned. We will miss Paul especially during our traditional Veterans' Day gatherings, which he was instrumental in initiating several years ago. Our ranks have thinned significantly since then, and the most recent loss is one that those of us remaining certainly acknowledge with respect and regret. Rest in Peace, Paul. Lee Komich
