Rich and I were good friends and also classmates in the Applied and Engineering Physics department of the Cornell College of Engineering. I always felt that prejudices against his Queens accent kept many people, including the professors, from appreciating Rich's brilliance. One day in Quantum Mechanics class Rich raised his hand and asked a question that none of us knew the answer to. The professor responded, "I can't believe that at this advanced point in the semester you are asking such a basic question! Does anybody else have a question?" No hands were raised. Rich was there to learn, not to score brownie points. I always felt that he should have gotten into a top graduate school, but that the Cornell professors sold him short. Still, it sounds like he was appreciated in his later working life as well as his home life. I only wish that he had lived longer and that I had reconnected with him. I am confident that he lives on in many hearts.

Leaving a message here seems out of place as it is more than a year since your passing, Richard. I just found out. It explains the unanswered emails from those of us from Cornell. You were part of that magic that was Prospect of Whitby coop at Cornell, though you never lived there 81-82. I'm not sure you knew that you left an indelible mark on so many of us.
What a brilliant, intriguing, quirky, caring soul! You had such a voracious quest for knowledge and shared that energy with others. Heck, you even helped me meet my "bucket list" before graduating Cornell which included a pie eating contest at the AG school. Sharing your technique with me of choosing sticky pies and smearing as much of it on your face so there's less left to eat, I think you took the championship, didn't you? Did your picture get in some paper? It was so long ago...
How you loved nature... and that laugh of yours. Mark and I had the pleasure of seeing you a few years back in VA. That laugh still as hearty! I swear I can still hear it resonate.
Rich, your life was too short but you made sure it burned bright, It will continue do so in those of us who were lucky to know you.
Be in peace, my friend. Carry our love with you.

I'm, so sorry to learn we lost Rich. We were friends as undergrads at Cornell. We stayed in touch for several years afterwards, lost touch as life moved on, but we reconnected about 15 years ago. We managed to get together in 2009 when I visited the Washington area with my family. I enjoyed exchanging emails with Rich, and appreciated his sense of humor. Rich always proudly shared the latest about Mia an Nick. I wanted to see him again when visiting the Washington area in December 2021. Sadly, I came across his obituary when he didn't return my emails. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
Best Regards,
Bob Eisenstadt Los Altos, CA

Rich was a matter-of-fact kind of guy, and it took a while to realize what a kind and loving person he was. A person of great integrity, he took life as he found it, loved his family profoundly, and found great joy in the natural world. He was a service-minded, unpretentious man who left the world much better for his presence, and as his sister-in-law I mourn his loss deeply.
My deepest condolences to Jeannine, Mia and Nick, to my siblings, and to Rich's siblings, who knew and treasured him from his infancy.

Richard was a creative and brilliant man, loving father, husband and brother. Honestly, he was the first baby I ever held and cared for. It is hard to imagine that he is not with us.
Sending love and condolences to all his family and friends.

Richard was a valued member of Raytheon BBN's Information Exploitation Group in Rosslyn, VA since October 2014. He was a typical BBNer – quirky, inquisitive, and always willing to offer help and support. Richard was always willing to take on new challenges and as a result worked a wide variety of programs at BBN, establishing a reputation for himself across multiple business units as an innovative thinker. Since the news of his passing, condolences have poured into our group from across the country, a testament to the many people Richard touched in his time at BBN. He will be sorely missed by all of us.
