I had the honor and privilege of working with Judge Fortkort during his years on the Circuit Court bench. Judge Fortkort was a truly delightful person to know - extremely witty and warm to everyone on the staff and his fellow Judges. I enjoyed many conversations with Judge Fortkort over our shared love of travel, particularly to Ireland. He spoke so often of his love for his family and I know he always looked forward to any time he could spend with his children and grandchildren. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends. Dear Mary, Michael, Peter, and John, seeing your father's photo and other family photos brought back a flood of very happy childhood memories of playing in your back yard on Overbrook Drive and catching salamanders and tad poles in the creek in your back yard on warm summer afternoons, and gathering green apples with your permission to take home so our Mom, Goldie, could make an apple pie. Every visit to your home and backyard were like a trip to the Land of Oz! Your parents were always so kind, and encouraging to us. They inspired us to volunteer and server our own communities as adults [Darlene in Maryland and Denise in New Jersey]. We appreciated that you Father and Mother trusted us to walk home from all those summer swing team practices at the Knights of Columbus with you. While we are sorry to hear of your father's passing, we rejoice and celebrate his full life of service and thank our Lord that he and your Mother are reunited for eternity. May you take comfort in knowing how positively he affected the lives of two of your Falls Church/Arlington, VA childhood friends. God bless you all.

I was very sorry to see the death notice relating the death of Hon. Thomas A. Fortkort in Wednesday's Washington Post yesterday, October 13, 2021. I also regret that I had not heard of Tom's death earlier as well as the fact that I am in my home in Lewes, DE and not in Washington, DC, when I saw the announcement, preventing me from attending his viewing and funeral Mass.
I first met Tom through his late wife, Deanna. I had been a shareholder at Wickwire, Gavin , LLC, from 1984 to 1996, where Deanna had been the office manager. On the many occasions of firm events, Tom always attended and it was my great pleasure to see and talk to Tom. Ironically, the last time I saw him was at Deanna's visitation and funeral Mass some 13 years ago. Tom, naturally, was heartbroken since it was a wonderful relationship.
Tom, who was recently honored by the Fairfax County Bar Association for his 50 years of service , was really one of the "good guys." There was nothing pretentious or haughty about Tom, who, while always dignified, never took him self too seriously. He decidedly never suffered from the dread "robe-itis" that afflicts too many who attain the level of judge. I never had the pleasure of appearing before Tom but know instinctively that he was curteous and fair to all that appeared before him. My sincerest condolences to Tom's children and grandchildren with the hope that they find solace in knowing what a very good man their father and grandfather was. Dan Toomey

We were saddened to hear of Tom's passing. We were neighbors and friends for many years with Tom and Deanna in Tamarack, enjoying the bridge club, bowling, neighborhood gatherings, and just being friends. We and others also benefitted from his advice and steady hand. He was a special person and will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family.

Mary, David and John & Michael Mary, and to all my cousins, I am very saddened by the loss of your father Tom. When I first met him, he spent a lot of the Thanksgiving evening telling me stories about my father Tom. I truly appreciated him caring enough to then send me a fishing photo of my father that my dad had sent to him long ago. It was a very thoughtful gesture. To Mary, Michael, Peter, John and the entire and extended Fortkort family - Please accept my sincere condolences in the passing of your father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. I know that my words will not take away the sorrow that you feel, but I hope that they will comfort all of you in knowing what a loving, gracious, and sincere couple that your parents were. I did not know Judge Fortkort that well -- I knew your mother because I worked for Wickwire Gavin; I do remember on many occasions where I did meet and converse with Judge Fortkort. How lucky you are that you have these wonderful memories of your mother and father. They stood beside each other, laughed with each other, and made each other the special persons they were. I hope that these memories will instill in each of you the will to live a life as your parents did. They have been reunited and everyone who knew them is a better person for having known them. Prayers to each of you and I am asking God to comfort each of you today and in the days going forward.
