Obituary of Anna Louise Shaw

Anna “Ann” Louise Shaw, age 97, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away November 3, 2021 of natural causes. Funeral Mass for close friends and family will be held November 6, 2021 at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, McLean, VA. 

 

Anna Louise, better known as Ann was born May 3, 1924 in Wabash, IN to Phillip and Hazel Magner.

 

Parents; Phillip Grant Magner and Hazel Mae (Harris) Magner,  Ann was the youngest of three children Phillip G. Magner II and John Knight Magner.

 

She was a teenager during the Great depression.

 

The 40’s brought World War II.  Her family joined the war effort by donating their car for use of its metal.  She and her father worked for Honeywell when the company turned its efforts to war as well. She helped with making sights for rifles using real human hairs in the sight making her a “Rosie the Riveter ''.   She attended Purdue University for 2 years where she met her husband James “Jim” Robert Shaw.  They were married in 1945. Their first child, a daughter Carol Ann Shaw (Emans)  was born in 1946, and son James “Jim” Robert Shaw Jr. in 1947 in Wabash, IN. 

 

The family moved to Springfield, Ohio where Jim worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, in Dayton, Ohio as aeronautical Space engineer.  It was here that John Paul Shaw was born in 1949 followed by Douglas Alan Shaw in 1951.

In the 60’s, her husband Jim took a Job in Washington, DC at NASA headquarters and the CIA in McLean as an expert in Russian Technology. The family moved to Mclean in 1964 and joined Lewinsville Presbyterian church. Anna became active in the music program, singing in the choir and an assistant Organist. She also worked at United Virginia Bank in McLean as a teller, head teller, and account manager.

In the 70’s they built a home in Vienna and Anna retired from the bank.

In the 80’s Anna volunteered to organize and curate the church's music library with its hundreds of sheets of music, and she donated many bells to the church's new collection.  She taught chimes with little ones, sang in the choir and played handbells.

 

The 80’s and 90’s brought grandchildren with the last being born in 1992. In 1998 she lost her daughter and her husband within two weeks. After Jim died, she lived on her own until 3 years ago when she required in-home care. She got her wish to live in her home until the end.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents Philip and Hazel, brothers John and Puck, daughter Carol, and granddaughter Ashley (John and Sharon).

 

She is survived by Jim and Nancy Shaw and son Ryan, John and Sharon Shaw, and children Evan, and Brittany (Coward), Doug and Effie Shaw and children Tara (Scott), Kyle, Rebecca (Butler) and Taylor, Carol's daughters Megan (Rosenbeck) and Elizabeth (Myers). Great Grandchildren, Angelina Shaw, Carter (Scott), Olivia Meintel, Liam, Chase (Rosenbeck), Connor (Meyers), Timothy and Riley (Coward), Owen, Olivia, and Miles (Kyle), Harvey (Butler), and Jackson (Taylor).
