My husband Jim and I were friends of Dick’s through St Anne’s. He was a member of our Dinner Club: he hosted us several times in Inlet Court. When he came into our house, he almost bounded in the door to talk architecture with Jim. His enthusiasm was impressive: he was a great deal of fun. He brought us joy. We were saddened to hear about his death. This morning we watched the beautiful funeral service at Holy Comforter: we can’t help but think it was what he would have wanted. The love was visible: no words needed.

That Dick grew up with a spiritual core and lived as a man of faith shone through in the service for him. He demonstrated his belief in the inherent worth of people, and his family, church, and community serve now as his witnesses and legacy. In these gifts I am sure Dick considered himself a lucky man, and was a good and faithful servant. My sympathies to Courtney and the rest of Dick's family.

Dick joined us, at age 80, on a hike to the top of North Mountain during our annual church retreat at Shrinemont in Orkney Springs, Va. Not only was he not winded, he kept up a conversation all the way up the mountain and was a delightful hiking companion. Photo taken October 31, 2016. We will miss him. Bill Burton and Laurel Wanrow

I will miss Dick. He was a good friend, a faithful member of St. Anne’s, an entertaining breakfast companion, and a wonderful storyteller. He worked with Mom at the Closet for awhile, and we enjoyed his company riding to and from breakfast and church. Seeing him at HWTE made my heart glad he was safe.
Blessings to Karen and Courtney and their families.

I'm so sorry to hear that Dick has died. I met Dick and Rhoda on a trip to China in 2007 and remained friends with them and with Dick until he stopped answering his phone and his mailbox was always full. He was a lovely man and a good friend and I miss his presence in my life when he was visiting his family in Lexington and I, my family in D.C. My sympathy to his daughters and his grandchildren of whom he was very proud. Betsy Schildkraut

So sorry to hear about Dick’s passing.
Met him nearly two years ago at Hunters Woods where he was a resident, as was my mother Alicia. We spoke often about architecture, foreign service, and his growing up in Wisconsin.
Wonderfully written obituary highlighted many of the subjects he shared with me and other members of my family.
He will be missed, and I particularly send my thoughts and prayers to Karen and Quinn.
